If I deploy an Exocraft bay and then delete it
Am I still considered in ownership of said exocraft so that I can summon it from the Freighter?

Or do I NEED to have an active geobay somewhere?

Yes, once you build a geobay and delete it, you may not be able to summon it, but the exocraft still exists, with all of its contents and tech that you had installed on it. You just can't summon it if no geobay exists anywhere. Build another geobay and you'll be able to summon it, in the exact same condition as you last left it.

EDIT: By extension this also means it's impossible to have 2 of the same exocraft, and it also means that you can simply build another geobay or even deconstruct and rebuild the same geobay to summon your exocraft anywhere. Build geobay, deconstruct it, use the exocraft, go to another planet, build geobay, deconstruct it, etc (which is a nice way of getting your roamer onto any planet before you get a freighter and/or its summoning station). This means you'd need to keep the materials to build it on your person which would take up 3-4 slots of inventory, though.

You build them all somewhere. Then you use an exocraft summoning station that you take out of your backpack, like a portable refiner, to call the vehicle of your choice.

Or build the room on the freighter, then all you gotta do is call your freighter (which you can do while standing on a planet, not sure if many players know you can do that).

As long as you're not in a Red/Green/Blue system, unless you have the relevant upgrades for the freighter to go to those systems of course. Better than taking up a slot in your backpack.

Easyest way to handle this is to create all bays at your Settlement. That is the one location you frequently visit and it is not in the way of anything you do there.

You don't delete it, you dismantle it so it goes in your inventory. Then you can drop it any time. Do this till you have materializer in freighter, but that only works when freighter is in same system. Sometimes folks don't want to drag the big ship around and it only takes one slot. Either way works.

As long as the exocraft itself is physically on that planet, you can resummon it on that planet. As others have said, the Materializer in you freighter requires that you have one platform for each exocraft built somewhere and the dish(I can't remember it's actual name off the top of my head) lets you summon ANY exocraft on that planet.
