if you've seen a ship you like in a system, camp at a trade post you can put down a save point/beacon next to you. save and reload then wait for the ships to come in until the S-Class of the one you want comes in and you buy or exchange for it... it works better if you leave ALL the landing pads free for traders... if none of the first or second wave of ships is wot you want reload to the restore point you made previously... repeat until you get wot you want

NB. there is a faster way involving placing a base computer so you can build a teleporter and instead of reloading, teleport to where you already are (it's faster than reloading and still resets the ship spawns (if my memory hasn't failed me i think this little gem was courtesy of @Prescient Stones)

there is no secret/magic strategy

land close to a trading post ,
not blocking one of the landing platforms on the trading post
wait either for an s-class of the design ypu are hunting for
or if willing to upgrade a lower class one, take a lower class one

Is a Trading Post a better location for ship hunting than a Space Station?

@Zak, yup and if you teleport to the same place instead of reloading, MUCH faster over time UNLESS it's a system with that specific ship as a 1st or 2nd wave S-Class on the space station... but that's just exotics
@OP: you still have to deal with RNG and you WON'T get an S-class ship (except exotic) in a poor system

More traffic. Stations can be awfully quiet at times for no apparent reason.

Yeah, now that you say that, that's right. Sometimes several minutes can pass and no ships would arrive at stations. I'd often give up waiting and go to another station. Somehow, I kept ignoring the Trading Posts most of the time. Thanks :)

Depending on what you want, just keep your ears open and you can hear the exotics when they land or take off. They make a very distinctive sound. Other than that, high economic systems have a very slight advantage on S class ships being in the mix.

Just check out ships you like when in station or at a trade center. I tend to use the pilots for a good source of Trit anyway at the station.

Now that you can turn any ship into an S class ride, it seems like finding a wild S class is a bit harder than it was before they introduce that upgrade feature.

Yes, as long as I can get a B Class, I take it. You need, what... like 70k Nanites to upgrade from B to S? It may actually be quicker to make this many Nanites than to find an S Class ship.

Scrapping random ships for expansion slots also yields some tech modules that can be sold for thousands of Nanites, so... two birds with one stone: expansion slots and Nanites to upgrade the class.

A super easy method to find an exotic (So S-rank) is using the pirate encounter (the one with pirate starships only, not the dreadnaught).
During this even tthere's a handfull of NPC starship fighting the pirates when you arrive. Amongst those NPCs there's always 1 exotic. After the battle they all land on the space station. So land on the space station and wait for it to land to purchase it.....

If you have glyphs and a portal, you can always shop online for coordinates to a nice ship someone else has found. It's not guaranteed (look for something recent) and you need to make sure it's in the same galaxy as you are. Otherwise, it's just a matter of how much patience you have AND units (S-class ships are expensive compared to even an A-class).
