Question about Explorer ships
Currently I have one called Dance of the Wind. If any of you have come across it, it has the two prongs that stick out either side of the ship.

When I got it, I though what a beauty! Now, sadly, I've found it is very impractical for.... exploring. Those wings hit everything. I can't even fly (cause I have stuff in the refiner and don't want to warp) over to repair a frigate without it damaging itself on a landing and take off. And there isn't even anything above it.

Don't know if I should laugh or cry about that. Landing on planets is a problem as well, if anything is "Tall." I used to think trade centers were safe until I was coming in at an angle today, wasn't even to the trade center yet and hit the E for my landing. Sure enough, I hurt my ship cause it clipped the building.

I feel like a bad flyer all of a sudden. So I jump in it to go get my solar. Never had this problem in my solar... Land it for the first time on my big ship's deck and....

I'm blocked in lol. I can't, on either side, get around my ship to get to the decking and was jet packing right near the stairs to try to slide through the bars to cross over into the other landing sections. This is a lot of work hehehe

So the question is, are the ones with the big arms straight up and down any better? Is there a particular style that avoids most of the problems? I don't mind one or 2, but all of them.. well it's becoming an unfun ship :/ Will post a pic of it so all of you know which one I'm talking about.

Thanks for the help.

I have had similar ships in the past and didn't have that problem, it may be a new bug.

Larger ships are going to run into stuff. Just grab something more compact.

I agree with Idaho about this. I had one of those big explorers like in your screenshot and got rid of it for the reasons you described. That was about 3 years ago. I found that for me the best explorers are the tall ones with either small or no side pods. You can climb up the back for a better vantage point and for protection from possible predators that cannot reach you there.

Technically, once you have the green circle and hit E to land, it should turn off collision and you will pass right through objects. There may be a bug, or maybe you are pressing E and not getting the green circle confirmation (so it is headed below the trade center to land).

I usually avoid any of the ships with long pointy things sticking out. Mainly because they are a hassle to run around once you pop out at a station or wherever. The small Exotics are ideal (they just are annoying that they take an extra 10secs to decide to land).

I also avoid the sun ships (or whatever they are called) that put out the annoying sails that obstruct your view when in flight. I always play first person so they might not be as annoying in third person view.

If it must be an explorer, get a nice x-wing:

Mines are also too large and clip trough the walkway in space stations.... just use something else... they are a bit glitchy and offer no real advantages (warp range of a freighter is way better).

So I only use them as pack mules (to carry my cookings).

Imo fighters are the best choice and they happen to be quite compact too (and have the highest damage bonus).

Finless Guppies for the win! They have about the footprint of Nomad or a Rover.

(But their full built out Cargo IS only 105, vs 120. But then, once you have a freighter...)

Actually, I'm flying a short-fingered Squid as a daily driver right now. The RNG gods were very, very good to it. But you really can't plan on finding, or even farming one of those.

Just go on the NMS exchange to find a squid. The last three expeditions (9-11) have all had squids pass through at least one space station, and several exotics. Of course we have no units so it's just a tease... It pays to take the intermediary jumps between rendezvous, not just the big hops.

I believe the advantage of Explorers is supposed to be max fully upgraded hyperdrive range. Maneuverability in regards to obstacles is mostly a factor of getting as small a ship as possible and upgrades, along with the potential option of the hover if you get one of the newer crashed sentinel interceptors from the dissonant stuff.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I think I might try an exotic ship and maybe come back to a smaller explorer later.

Thought perhaps I just needed a nice reboot on the computer and to try again. Warped right into a pirate fight. Could destroy the shields no problem but then other problems happened. Couldn't down the engines, tried to hurt the hull and nothing, couldn't hit the turrets that fire into the trenches but could hurt the big cannons on the nose.

In short the civilian ship went down. So I reloaded and flew my solar over and saved the ship. (ie the engines also blew up and could hurt the hull/the cones that pop up after the shield balls are down.)

So at this time I just think the ship must have some problems. One nice thing is when I got back with my solar it was parked in the far right hangar bay spot when facing the outer doors. I could run around it there cause the scaffolding wasn't right next to it. So I think I'll use it for now as a pretty cargo hauler or a parked illegal goods storage bank or something.

Thanks again for the help! :)

I have always loved the look of the explorers but the reality is they just aren't very useful in a fight. Come equipped with a flyswatter and box of kleenex for weapon strength. Guppies and interceptors are much more effective, solars ok, new ship is quite nice. Explorers look cool in the hanger though if you have extra room for one.

Huh I did not realize people referred to that one class of Exotic as guppies.

Guppies and squids, decidedly aquatic.
