Story = good?
Last time i tried No Man Sky - many years ago - it has practicly no story.

In a review i saw the story to be rated as good. Has there been a story DLC? Hand crafted? Proceduraly? Voice over or text?

How many years ago did you play? The main story was revamped about 5 years ago I think. That has not changed much, but additional story lines have been added since then.

The main story and the side stories are primarily extended tutorials that guild you to various game mechanics and features. For the most part you are an observer learning about the universe, there are no chooses that effect the outcome. It is text based with no voice acting.

Some players really like it, other hate it with white hot passion. I think most players view it for what it is an extend tutorial with a few nice rewards. You an ignore most of it without losing much.

If your looking for a hero's journey, or a morally grey space opera you will be disappointed.

It's basically reading some easy to miss text lines, do some fetch quest, get a few more lines.
The concepts it brings are interesting, even emotional at times, but since it's all text, 99% of the players just skip it without understanding anything.
So, the story is good (in my opinion) but it's not displayed in a interesting way.

Thank you for the information.

This is a sandbox game and just like all sandbox games if you bought it for the story you will be disappointed.
Do people even research the games they purchase anymore?

The story, such as it is, is good. How the story is told is pretty weak. A lot of reading is required and some pieces of lore show up in scraps at various POIs. The most recent additions (Autophage, Constructed Race, Trace of Metal) are pretty interesting- but again- they are told similar to an old King's Quest graphical adventure from the 1990's.

So I would say great on story content, pretty poor on story delivery. (Unless you like that reading text boxes and remembering the details while you put together the scraps of data)

I agree with mr Butterlow, the story concept is interesting, but the way in which it is presented... Meh. Dialog options are limited throughout, The "Base Computer" quest line forces you into something that looks like puzzles but that are actually random and meaningless, before devolving into a very anticlimactic "go there, read text, then go there, read text, etc" almost at nauseum, the incomplete autophage giving you clues about "the seventh, the third, etc" just leads to a couple of words that may or may not point to some yet-to-be-added content, the Atlas path quests never ever end.

The game itself is great though, I enjoy it a lot and expect to be playing it for at least months and probably years to come!

I failed to research the game back in 2016, and was very disappointed to find it was primarily a sandbox game; without a fully developed story to go with it. At the time I described the game as a really nice single player game engine in search of a game.

The irony is: I slowly came around to enjoying the relaxed, sandbox, game play. There was a certain freedom form not having a story/script that needed to be followed.

NMS became a peaceful oasis away from the MMS FPS games I was playing, where I didn't need to be on pins and needles all the time. Instead, I could just chill in NMS.

Haha King's Quest ! Good Lord, I remember loading that one up with a floppy disc, hours later got to play it . Anyone know what a floppy disc is lol . Ooops, I may have just aged myself

For me the concept behind the story, the game's lore etc is interesting. Its just that the delivery is somewhat like a lecture in some subject you have no interest in. Partly this is due to the 1st person narrative (As I entered the room.. etc), rather than a more interactive way, like a Gek waving for you to go and talk to them, or a Vy'Keen handing you a leaflet. Anything interactive in fact. It would be great if HG would revisit the way they have done it, but rather unlikely now.

It has a great story, but it's something that requires more context to make it really come through properly. Text just doesn't capture the desperation of Artemis, or the frustration of Apollo. If you are like some of us and can read context well enough, it's all there. It's just rather dull without actual dialogue.

A tablet interaction that works by a linked Artemis Translator would be ideal. We have the translators already, we have knowledge stones. Give us a male/female option for the screen reader and use the already existing text as a subtitle for those who won't get the scrambled words are the words not translated. The multiverse loop is too good to have as just text-based communication.

I will try to explain how NMS seems to me. Yes, this is a sandbox, but it still has some modest plot, which in my opinion is not decorated with a finale. For most, it ends with collecting all the grains, creating a new star and moving to a new galaxy. This allows you to gently let the player float freely, without disappointing him with the end of the game. Of course, the main thing in NMS is not the plot, but a lot of different creative possibilities. You can explore new worlds and collect information about them. At the same time, the discoveries are assigned to your account, no one else will ever be able to claim the championship except you. You can build your bases in any galaxy, cozy houses in which everything is done as you want, and where you will always be pleased to return. You can trade or complete missions. You can arrange your starship or even a large cargo ship. You can practice xenoarchaeology. You can fight the hated drones. You can practice xenoculinaria. You can control the fleet of your frigates by sending them on expeditions. You can manage a small settlement and develop it. And only you can choose what your favorite activity to do in the game. But the only thing you should not forget about in the game is to survive in the harsh conditions of the game. And in a permanent death session, death means the end of the game in fact. No records, no results, no memory. You just disappeared, that's all. This is the main highlight of the game, you must remember that you are not playing, but living in the game.

That as a great summation, Antares. Bravo!

Have some points.

I think the story is great but you have to really dive into it to understand it all and it's pretty fragmented. Even the smallest things like the voice inside your exosuit has a complex story behind it that you can discover for yourself if you happen to find the right structures.
