Everyone has explained what you will get for an upgrade- the reality is you will reach a point where you have more nanites and credits than you need. Upgrading ships is a way to decrease your ever expanding balances.

You can actually play the game with the starter ship if you want that action. It is just more fun for most people to upgrade to an S class ride with OP credentials. As a sandbox game, there is no compelling game play reason to do much of anything- it is just what seems fun and interesting to you in any given moment.

I never do the planetary refiner/storage unit stuff. It has never seemed interesting to me, but some folks love the concept of maxing it out. I really enjoy the main game play loop of exploring for the sole sake of seeing what is over the next hill. For a lot of players, that gets old fast and so we have a ton of options to take the edge off exploring 24/7 and to give the "non-exploring" types things to do in the game.

So upgrading a ship is not needed unless it seems interesting. You can usually find higher class ships with a bit of searching if that would feel more fun.

Each class C,B,A,S in order of good to best will increase the TOTAL number of available slots (you still would need to unlock them) using units at the station or other methods.

And sometimes a S class ship will have less slots than a C class ship. Haulers and Explorer's comes into station at C-class with 40 cargo and 30 inventory all the time.

Supercharged slots are random: so a s-class ship could have different placement of slots compared to the same ship you upgraded from a to s.

Upgrading ships should only be done
  • you really like the design.
  • ship has a LOT of unlocked slots from the time you bought it. example: buying a b class explorer with 40/35 from a station. so overall less work. the sentinels ships come with a lot slots and are a good candidate for upgrading.

the game does NOT require you to upgrade ships etc: you can get by with the basic ships. upgrading is just something to do for fun, later on when you're swimming in units/nanites.

By the time you get to 500 mil units you don't need to worry about money in the game any more but the cap is low, 4.3+ Billion so finding ways to spend your ill gotten gains can become an issue that maxing out ships, tools, etc helps with. Nanites take a bit longer to max out but if you get lucky and find a large patch or two then it's just a resource grind. Your choice. It's a big varied sandbox. Do what is fun, change your mind and do something else. :nmsunits:

Putting it in one way, my class c sentinel ship said it averaged 2900 dps. class b said 3100. So just stat boosts, not really worth so many Nanites in the early game just buy a bigger ship and stack it with the s tier upgrades and you will see a much better cost to performance ratio. eg 1 s class hyperdrive tech for 700 nanites will likely far outdo the 10 k upgrade, and you can always uninstall that and move it to a better ship later.
Creative Mode is an easy way to experiment with spending nanites at the ship upgrade terminal to learn exactly what happens when upgrading a ship. A junk creative mode save is an easy way to try out and experiment with anything in the game and check the game catalogue for further advie. :D

This tells me you dont understand the ins and outs of upgrading a ship if all you think it does is increase the stats.

OP isn't late in the game, and won't have many nanites. Regardless of what upgrading their c grade ship will give, it is an inefficient use of nanites to upgrade your starter ship as it is much more cost effective to use units to acquire a better ship and upgrade it with tech. While I am not directly addressing their question of 'what will change', I am informing that it is not a great idea to do so at this point, as they may feel like they wasted their nanites otherwise when they see a cool sentinel or s class ship later on. But each is free to play their own way
