No Man's Sky

Servers will be shut down one day?
This is from an article in The Atlantic and the statement is from Sean Murray, lead developer of No Man's Sky.

http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/02/artificial-universe-no-mans-sky/463308/

Stated at the end of the article, "At some point the servers will be shut down. It will all be turned off, and it will be us who pull the plug.”

So they have created an infinite universe that is supposed to suck our gaming time, essentially our time, and they already mention an end to the game. What will happen to all our gaming accomplishments? Are there no viable alternatives to shutting down the servers eventually?

This does not motivate me to spend time and money on a game. Personally, I'm a long term gamer. I like to hold onto games and play them for years.

Because they are not delusional and know that every game has to come to an end one day, who knows when that will be. 5 years? 10 years? 30 years? But eventually nobody will be playing this game anymore so it will be pointless to keep wasting money on servers.

You have nothing to worry about though, as long as there is demand, they will keep their servers running.

I'm not reading through the article but it's likely only referring to the ability to name stuff and influence the persistant universe.

For example, discover a species and name it. Next time you log your discoveries into the nexus it'll upload it to the server which all players upload to.

So if the server is shut off we can all still play, it's just no longer a shared universe.
I assume it will only effect the online features of the game, which is only a minor part of the game anyway.

In other news why don't Microsoft support Windows 95 anymore?

It honestly goes without saying that every online game will have its plug pulled at some point. The only difference we're seeing here is that Sean is saying it NOW instead of saying it a week before they actually do it. Don't read into it so much, and if you insist on doing so, remember that the same can be said for literally ANY online video game.
Don't worry, you can play the game offline, so you can play it for many many years to come. I suggest you keep a computer alive that can play this game for years. Pass it down to your kids as an inheritance and tell them to play. Let them pass it down, until someone in your family, ages from now, proves Sean wrong and will discover the last never visited planet in the No Man's Sky universe. You family will end up in the guinness book of world records.... well it may be guinness book of galaxy records by then.
Well, I can understand that games come to an end, and keeping central servers running indefinitely is just not reasonable.

However, kind of seems like in-the-box thinking to me. Why couldn't they implement something like a decentralized server of sorts like SETI@home, which uses the computational power of thousands or millions of idle PCs?

The game hasn't even launched and they are already thinking about the end? It is a bit demotivating.

it will take years before they will shut down and these days you got alternative server software look at star wars battlefront 2 it has been shut down 4 years ago and there is still multiplayer because of those multiplayer software developers so if the game is amazing the multiplayer will live on forever.

I think you're reading into this too much. If you don't buy the game based on this tiny issue then you are cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Still offline gameplay, all good.
Same. Although this makes me want to buy from GoG in case Steam drops the game.

Wow ok, so I did skim through that article OP linked to and just... wow. Way to cherry pick one single thing and then present it out of context. Pretty obvious attempt at trolling after reading the article.
Here's the actual context of the quote and what the devs are referring to by "shutting down the servers": “People will stop playing long before even .1 percent of everything has been discovered,” Murray reflected. “That’s just how games are. I would be foolish to think anything else. It’s a sad thought though. When we fly through the galactic map, we see all the stars, each of which will have planets around them, and life, and ecology—and the vast, vast, vast majority will never be visited.

All they're talking about is how when it's all said and done, and the last person to ever play NMS quits playing for the final time, there will still be so much content unexplored. To try and twist that into fear mongering that the servers are on a timer and might be shut down before you're ready for that to happen is just plain trolling. Get out.

I'm not trolling dude. I'm being serious and it is a concern of mine. I didn't take it out of context. The point is that they will shut down the servers one day. I know it's steam community chat, but please be respectful.

Well anyway, peoples responses and perspectives on it is heartening. I imagine many years before it comes to an "end". Plus, I am ok with offline play. The game is supposed to be so massive that even seeing another person will be super rare.
