* For your ship, forget any generic dmg rating and put your mouse right over the weapon. Move things around until highest number. The other stats, shield, maneuverability, etc, sure you have to go by the ship stats.
* For your multi-tool, install only one weapon (like Neutron Cannon) and move your modules around until you get the maximum rating. If you need a second weapon type, first why? then second, remove the other type (i.e Neutron Cannon and NOT the upgrade modules) and maximize the rating again.
* For your Exosuit, watch Xaine's World tutorial to maximize placement
--------------
As a general rule:
* I place the main dmg module in a SS (supercharged slot), then my best upgrade into any remaining SS. This works for ship or Multi-tool.
* Exosuit - I play survival so I prioritize health and shield, So those shield upgrades or the Sentinel upgrades get placed into the the three SS exosuit.
Note: I could give a polo's butt if I can jetpack for three minutes straight. I much prefer +180% on my shield and health
For the rest of us, if you're NOT playing on Survival Mode, jetpacking for that long is really handy. It's faster than most of the exocraft, and doesn't tear up the terrain.
For instance, in my multitool supercharged slots I ususallt prefer mining upgrades that increase resource collected over mining speed or scanner upgrades that increase scan distance.
Whatever cuts down on grind time is my personal preference.
ExoSuit: ALWAYS X-Class Hazard Modules. Bumps the time upto 5mins with 2 in supercharged and the main hazard module in another one.
StarShip: Photon Cannon: this, after the sentinel ship upgrades, is the primary weapon. Never put shields. Useless. If spare put phase beam. For me its a secondry weapon as it leeches shields. Every fight i start with photon cannon swtich to phase beam for every new pirate ship. Never recharged shields, maybe 1/2 in 25hrs gameplay.
Multi-Tool: Mining beam till you get your industrial farms setup and then S-Class upgrades for Neutron Cannon if using or the primary boltcaster module. Never put the scanning upgrades - you get more money, but money is not an issue later on. In the beginning I might put in it.
Minotaur: The minotaur cannon is the most powerful weapon in the game so put the s-class upgrades. Next put the engine upgrades (s-class only). Don't put the adirane flame. Adds 1second to the jump. The minotaur with 3 s-class for engine and cannon and laser is my exosuit.
Freighter: No idea. Probably the hyperdrive range extenders.
Normal.
Exosuit: Put 1 x-class hazard upgrade. 1 s-class movment upgrade and 1 s-class life support.
Rest is the same.
This is not min-maxing per se: this is what I've found best. I disagree with go by stats - go by play-style. And don't worry - it really doesn't make much of a difference.
A GOOD X-class environmental protection (9-10% in all envs) in a supercharged slot works miracles for raw environmental resistance.
