After some more digging, i figured out that for some reason steam can't load controller configuration for No Man's Sky and ONLY for No Man's Sky, all other apps like Superhot are just set to default controlls, and No Man's Sky is infinitely loading some controller configuration that doesn't exist
anyway, here's the process i generally post to use when controllers are not working properly...
NOTE: this is written with xbox controllers in mind... if you use something else, look at the UI for the proper buttons to hit where a "face button" is specified...
EDIT: actually, while looking for something else, i found this article on HG's zendesk... maybe it helps? it is not done from within the game... it is done directly from steam without the game running at all...
https://hellogames.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003976558-Controller-input-not-working-correctly-Steam-
if that doesn't help, i would certainly consider to file an issue ticket with them on that site... be sure to use a valid email address so you can update the ticket or respond to them if they request any additional info from you...
1. Press a button on the VR Controller to enter the options menu - (Y on Rift S).
2. You can press next to your head (left hand-side) to activate scanner.
3. Press down on left controller stick to scan planets and area.
4. Grip over right hand shoulder to use tool gun.
5. Left stick moves or teleports.
6. Point at right hand to change tool mode.
7. Right trigger selects from menu or fires weapons.
8. Grip key navigates through menus in game.
Good luck. It takes a little getting used to, but becomes second nature really quick.
