Best Base Material
So far my bases are timber, thinking of putting my research points into more materials for building unless im about to unlock better options to save them for

If I do spend on building materials is there anything which is better than the others?

Thinking Stone might be the easiest to mine in large quantities but open for all views

There is no "best base material". It's matter of taste, really. Some people like to build in timber or stone. They all give you the same protection. I like alloy because they look futuristic and it's a sci-fi game.

It's an aesthetic choice, really, since carbon, ferrite dust, and silicate dust are all plentyful, with slight variations per planet, of course.

I like them all. For my next big base, I think I will use stone for ground floors, and timber for upper floors. I especially like the timber triple windows!

You have no benefits changing from Wood to Stone or the other material. Its just looks. As far as I know. They all dont need much materials.

The "ready made" blueprint builds need many resources.

So I would go with what I like most and later spend the points for other parts.

Edit (damn I was to slow saving my post lol)

Timber, mostly CARBON
Stone, mostly SILICATE POWDER
Alloy, mostly FERRITE DUST

Silicate powder, to my knowledge is the only one of three base materials that cannot be crafted or purhcased.

Example:
CARBON:
Oxygen -> carbon
Condensed carbon -> carbon
underwater material -> both oxygen and condensed carbon

FERRITE DUST:
Rusted metal -> ferrite dust
Pure ferrite <-> Magnetized ferrite
other material -> dust

--------------------
On my last base (previous expedition) we started with only Alloy and I am in the process of switching it over to Timber because it has more noticeable color options.

Some players mix stone with timber for some amazing results.

@Zak - 100% spot on

I like cuboids too but they are power hungry so a base like that pretty much needs to be built near EM Hotspot.

I usually pick the individual piece building type that is more abundant on the planet. So if there are plenty of trees/bushes, I would go with wood. If you want your base well lit go with the cuboids.

You can just mix and match. I pretty much used all the available building types (at that time) when I made this portal base.

I like building on desert planets and the Tatooine style of the stone building set fits in perfectly :nmsvykeen:

true to a point but some things are different between them...

for example, i build with stone and used the walls with the big windows (Stone Large Window)... then i discovered that those ""windows"" are just huge holes in the walls with no glass in them... how did i find this out? during a storm i was standing at a window looking out and realized i was taking environment damage... this was in a single story room with each wall being two wall segments long... then i realized there was no glass used when building them :steamfacepalm: that sucked and while i love the look, i really do wish they had glass in them because i really do enjoy looking out the windows of my buildings without taking environment damage... i mean, what else are buildings for if not to protect you...

Prefabs are where it's at, for me. Less muss, no fuss, and ferrite is multiplicative with oxygen in a 2+ input refiner.

1 Ferrite Dust = 1 Pure Ferrite
1 Pure Ferrite + 1 Oxygen = 2 Rusted Metal
1 Rusted Metal = 2 Ferrite Dust

Lather, rinse, repeat as needed.

Bonus points: You don't have to wire anything, because the prefabs transmit power.

wot everybody said plus...
i luv NMS but don't overthink things cos it ain't that deep

I always have excess silicate, so I build stone. I refine to glass, and still max out my inventory. So much silicate! I will sometimes create a new base for more stone buildings just to get rid of it.

Carbon and ferrite is needed for so many other recipes, I find building with them is tedious
