shooting freighters in pirate systems now losing standing?
So if i research all over the net it says i shouldnt losing standing with a faction if i shoot their freighters cargo pods in a pirate system. I do target the big freighters not the small ones near it.... but still i do lose standing with the faction? Has something changed or what im doing wrong here?

I think you always have lost standing if you shoot the freighter. Not a fan, but my understanding is you can shoot up the support ships with no penalty.

Honestly, the "penalty" is kind of a joke. You can repair rep really easy so it is not like you are banned for life from a faction.

It changed after one of the last updates. You gain rep with the pirates but lose it with whichever race owns the system now.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised -- not by the fact that shooting pods lost me rep, I'm relatively new so I have no frame of reference and this makes sense to me, but by how often others perpetuated that you would not lose rep. Again, pretty new player, so I kept going back in game thinking "did I miss something? No? Huh."

They changed it in one of the latest updates. Before, there realy was no rep penalty for shooting fraighter's cargo pods. Now you lose rep for any kind of piracy. Honestly - very reasonable move. Piracy is too profitable, it had to be balanced this way.

It's a joke if you shot 1-2 pods. If you eliminate entire cargo fleet in the system - you will lose 50+ rep or even more.

Do you actually get negative effects if you go full negative reputation with one of the major race in the game ?

they may stop talking to you (no words, no missions) until you get your rep back up...

and what would the benefit be of having max rep with a faction?

Well, first of all - you get certain milestones for high rep with a race. Doesn't matter but just in case you know...
Second, if you have low rep, you have no access to certain tiers of mission, dialogs, can't buy high lvl blueprints and modules. In early game this kinda matters.
Third, high rep may unlock some useful dialogs in certain quests. Not that critical but still.
Maybe some more insignificant things here and there...

Milestone achievement can be slower. At the Anomaly you can collect a bunch of nanites for completing milestones handed in to one of the NPCs near the egg sequencer.

Space station missions have Gek, V'ykeen and Korvax missions which at higher tiers can give more desirable rewards. There are also some ranked blueprints that can be purchased at Minor Buildings and settlement from the NPC vendors, though most blueprints can alternatively be bought at the Anomaly with nanites. If you lose standing with a race because of pirate activity, you can check any negative rep with each race in the catalogue.
  • All that is needed to reset the entire negative rep with a race, are Forged Passports. These can most often be collected as pirate mission rewards or found in Pirate Systems or in other regular space situations.
The forged passport item, may also be found elsewhere in various situations or missions throughout the game. Visit a system with the matching negative race type, though without checking, that may not be essential and any space station, regular or pirate, may do. Take the Forged Passport to the Space Station Console found at the back of the space stations in the middle of the landing foyer. Submit them at the terminal and ALL the negative points will be redeemed.

Do it in a gek system....

Though about the passeport, it's only usefull if your rep get negative I guess (Not sure, I didnt manage to get that low, I was around 250 after my civilian convoys killing spree), using one only gave me 1 rep back each time (spent around 10), same as shoving a gek relic at an Gek NPC's face...

But also, destroying freighters and pods are lucrative. Freighters often drop 3-4 freighter cargo and the SFM are pretty frequent appearing about 1 in each freighter cluster on average. Plus all the freighter upgrades for frigate expeditions and the resources/vendor goods you get.
If you're smashing freighter clusters you don't really need the missions. You can buy multi-tools (S and A class are best) to break down for upgrade slots. You can salvage interceptors for starship tech slots and massive amounts of units. And the freighter clusters have SFM and freighter cargo, plus plenty of vendor trash, reagents, and frigate fuel.
And worst case you can check pirate system stations for missions for those things as well. Plus you can buy the tech and arms from the vendor for units and vendor them for nanites

Being a pirate is the lucrative life of luxury. Missions smishions.
And if you're really against being "evil" or "cruel," exclusively target Gek pirate systems. They aren't as cute and cuddly as they seem!

Something I dont get with the new freighter shield thingy is that civilian freighter dont have shield generators that you can break to take out their shield ???

kind of understandable, really... you can't actually ""switch sides"" and be a pirate, for example... when you enter a star system with an on-going pirate attack, you are tasked with protecting the civilian freighter even if you are a pirate...

perhaps this is meant to be reputation driven? perhaps, if you have a negative rep with the race of the freighter being attacked, you'll be tasked with helping to take it? idk and i don't think that is something actually coded yet... it may also not even be planned... that depends on future plans for NMS... we know they are a small stable with three games (franchises?) currently available and a fourth one being worked on...

This definitely have nothing to do with reputation....

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3055656816

My guess is that it was too much to do to update all freighter models, to add shield generator to them, which led to this inconsistency in space combat mechanics.... so it might be something waiting for a futur update....
I'm still eager to see that small destroyable appendage appear on every type of freighter, because I dont like inconsistancies... either this or freighters that dont have the appendage (and so cant get their shield disabled) also dont get to have shields.... or have a smaller shield that deplete when hit (like on starships).
