Your best defense is to regularly back up your save and restore if you believe it was a game glitch and not your error.
Personally, I like the custom save option where you can adjust the challenge and not have to worry about losing your save (for whatever reason) if you plan to use it as a forever save. I guess some folks "appreciate" the finality of losing everything, but just a game to me.
When I froze to death on an extremely cold planet, the game crashed after displaying the profound poem as an example (LOL).
The PD data had disappeared from the save data list. (LOL&LOL)
