No Man's Sky
This expedition is affecting my will to live
No personal refiner, crappy ship, and now these milestones require some really specific stuff. I have scanned dozens of creatures and have yet to find the record-setting stuff.

Any advice to help my ennui?

Yeah, I have really enjoyed the expeditions of the past. They were a streamlined introduction to the new content and generally well focused and enjoyable. This one is just super grindy and poorly done. Theres a new race out there, but it is not involved in this expedition at all. Theres new staves weapons out there, sorry, their not part of this expedition. Sure it has a reward for a space battle, but you are guaranteed to get one ever 5 warp jumps anyway. I feel really let down by this expedition. I would much rather pay $10 and get a well done expedition to introduce and enjoy the new content than this. I know NMS is trying to compete head to head with Starfield, but that is a mistake. NMS should continue to be NMS and if they want to do an expansion with a lot of new content and story, I'm happy to pay another $20 after 5 years.
The numerous eclectic bases you see along the expedition route often are designed to make the expedition less soul-sucking. To that end, I myself have built a series of 8 bases, 3 in the starting system, which have a complete range of all common resources, so one can leave the starting system quickly and wealthy, ready to buy a decent long range ship or freighter if desired:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3039206998
The first system is illustrated above, and 3 of its planets have bases with the various mined resources as listed in the screenshots. The Farm is designed primarily as a stasis device farm (if you have the blueprints for such), but it has all plant varieties if you want to make ignition devices instead. There are also fast cash crops like Venom Sacs and Nip Nip in large harvestable quantities. Generally I try to have each mineral resource at about 10K except for gold at about 20K which can be sold for large unit amounts. The Farm base also has all 10 storage containers. Since all the bases are next to portals, you don't really have to look them up in the base teleporters...just portal there and get the "Portal" expedition milestone while you are at it.

The other bases are in nearby systems (1 unupgraded jump away):
(*) Obeokay system: Base resources, 1 planet: Storm Crystals, P, Co, Su, So, Cu+, Portal
(*) Hikomo system: Base resources, 2 planets:
  • Planet 1 Base Resources: Dioxite, Fe++, Cu, Radon, Larval Cores, Portal
  • Planet 2 Base Resources: Pyrite, Sulphurine, Silver, Cu+, Drop Pod, Portal
(*) Antanoji system: Base resources, 1 planet: Emeril, Fe++, Rusted Metal, Portal
(*) Ginash system (pirate): Base resources , 1 planet: Indium, Gold, Silver, O2, Portal

Since at the start, nanites should be saved for the expedition milestone for 7000 nanites, - instead of buying the blueprints for the 3 engine types (cadmium, emeril, indium), you can get them free in the "Collector" quest reward: Gather 7 storm crystals to complete the "Bottled Lightning" quest reward, the Wonder projector blueprints, then build the Wonder Projector to get the 3 engine blueprints early in the game.

Some of the must have blueprints/goals in the milestone trek will be:
  1. "Planetside" - get the hyperdrive blueprints
  2. "Fear the Sun" - get the complete portal glyph set (just dig a long tunnel, load up on silicate)
  3. "Interstellar" - get the base computer blueprint (just warp to Obeokay and get the storm crystals while you are at it)
  4. "Bottled Lightning" - get the Wonder Projector blueprints, then build it to get "The Collector" milestone and all 3 engine types
  5. "Priceless" - Portable Refiner Mk 2 (a 2-slot exosuit refiner, probably the best new addition of this update)

There are lots of other nanite farms around, but I set up mine in the starting system so you just take a short range teleporter ride if you want to reset the mold balls. I permissioned the options so anyone can use the refiners. I notice most bases have tons of refiners but no public permissions for them.

I agree. I started the expedition at the beginning of the month and still haven't finished it because it's about as much fun as swimming in acid. It took me forever to find a planet with storm crystals and now I'm stuck on finding animals that are considered wonders!? I can only stand playing it for a little while before I quit and go back to my other saves where I'm doing actual fun stuff, like making that new stave weapon. I already did all the grunt work and checkpoints in the expedition, but I'm stuck on trying to find stupid pointless non-story-related nothings. This expedition was poorly planned out and it's not helping make NMS look better than Starfield.
I don't use mods, and was able to complete Exp 11, I did have problems finding a hostile enough critter, but reading this forum I saw people saying one was on one of the earlier worlds. So I back tracked and found that.

But it does take patience. This is not an instant gratification game.
There is an S class and an A class Sentinel Ship in the first system, On the PC also saw a couple of bases with S class rifle although they were not there on the switch.
wow. i finished this expedition at i think 30+ hours or something.
I have done 2 expeditions before and just got back to the game and started this one.
and i used this much time because i started making bases and all the regular gameplay i usualy do. so no rush.
but i have seen videos of people saying that they beat the expedition in less than 6 hours. witch make me wonder, how lazy are people?
they are giving you more content to the game, new reasons to log back in and 6 hours of gameplay is to grindy for you?
how short should the expedition be?

Take a gander at each "goal" by highlighting it and the rewards are shown.

Then... since you don't have to complete goals in any particular order - you might see some goals you can more easily achieve and that could assist you with some of the other goals.
Hmmmm I see the referee has thrown a flag 🇲🇦 on this post... ??? ...

Wait a sec, he's about to speak... 🗣️

I completed it first time in a similar time and had fun building lots of bases too and even made a musical aquarium ; D Second time was about 4 hours. Third time was just over 2 hours. Most of the first phase and a few later milestones can be done entirely in the start system : D It's cool you can complete milestones out of order which saves a lot of time. Some miletsones can be completed simply by landing on a planet or doing them simultaneously.

Having done it a couple times and following other player tips, it can be planned out and repeated quite quickly and no mods needed at all. That's been part of the fun puzzle finding the best way to do a 'speed run'. You could probably use past expedition ships or pre-order ships to do it even faster but you don't even need them as players have marked s-class ships with bases and other useful locations along the route and the nautilon finds crashed ships and submerged ruins underwater directly.
One miletsone unlocks all the glyphs so you can use them to travel about with a little research on where to go. One useful thing in this expedition is the free freighter and ability to use the onboard refiner and crate storage without having to unlock the blueprints or unlock the matter beam transfer tech. That was a surprise to discover and an easy way to have a huge inventory in the start of the expedition, to make the expedition inventories painless.

It's been a clever expedition and a lot of fun. Reminds me of the very first Pioneer expedition.

Past expeditions had more desirable rewards. Weapons, suit parts, ships , this one has ...
Along the expedition route players have marked a nice S-Class interceptor, some fun companions and even a living frigate can be found from the start or first rendezvous system using the milestone dream ariel transmitter. The robot companion is a nicely designed reward and fun, The other items too like the super crashed robot part hands and torso. They make great lights and sound great too in the base. The new wonder projector from the milestone reward is really fun to use especially as I discovered it can be resized. You can project animated creature discoveries and even found planets into your base. It's so cool. Every expedition has had some super rewards and this is no exception.

I'm hoping the rewards make it worth it but so far it has been a slog ._.

No need for hope.

Every single "reward" from the Expedition is noted on the in-game Expedition page.

Your wording implies you might not know that.

Take a gander at each "goal" by highlighting it and the rewards are shown.

Then... since you don't have to complete goals in any particular order - you might see some goals you can more easily achieve and that could assist you with some of the other goals.

I do so like a bit of sound logic, well spotted. Points all round. :steamhappy:
The same group suffering intense ennui (hopefully someone got that) over this expedition will during whatever last expedition they attempted had the same complaints. I just can't figure out how lazy and out of touch folks are. For Korvak's sake just drag your lazy patooties over to the anomaly, plod up to the great big shiny circle at the back and find everything you need. Get that immediate gratification instantly. This same group don't really want to do anything in the game other than log in, sigh greatly then drag their exhausted fingers over to the log out button and poke weakly at it.

They then perk right up, jump in the forum and spend hours whining and complaining about how the game is so awful, so shallow, so boring, so terrible. What a miserable life that must be. Go do something you enjoy, if there is anything...

And to cap it off all the really nice folks have spent a lot of time in this thread explaining, showing, giving you all everything you need and not a word of thanks. Not a peep, just more whining and unending complaints. Sad times.

As the OP I'm grateful for the helpful advice that a number of responses have provided. This thread has blown up more than I anticipated so I've been holding off on jumping into every discussion.
Well shoot me! It turns out that the reason I couldn't find the animals required was because the game was bugged. Supposedly they fixed it, so I will try again.
