Figuring out the order of planets in a system
Is there any way to figure out what order the planets of a system are in? I'd like to name them in sequence heading outwards from the star, using Roman numerals or Greek letters or something. Is it just a case of flying towards the star and measuring the distances to each planet?

Maybe portal sequence.

If you zoom in on the Galactic Map, you can see the orbits. Not sure it they are labeled though. You may be able to infer which is which if not.
On the local map you can rotate your ship and watch the planet orbits and determine which is closest to the sun. Then you can point your ship at each planet in order, scan, and then name them.

Each planet's portal in a system has a unique character sequence, where the first character is the planet's numbering in that system.
And if you are going to number the planets, it is a simple solution to your problem, to just follow the glyph numbering.

To help you know how the different glyph characters look, you can look at this wiki page.

And to see the glyph sequence, you don't have to look up the portal on the planet, you can see the sequence in photo mode, in the lower left corner.

The first glyph in a portal glyph address is the planet glyph. They are numbered 1-6, as there is a max of 6 planets. If you randomly insert the "0" glyph, or "7-12" glyphs, the portal will send you to the planet closest to the number you picked. So if you put a "0" in, the portal would send you to planet 1. These are the relevant glyphs, and numbers:

So, bad news, in game the stars functionally orbit the planets, so there isn’t a correct order. The planet locations are static within the system, and the stars aren’t reachable but move around to make the day/night cycle work. I imagine the next best you could do would be numbering by distance from space station, which you could probably figure out by spinning around and reading the ETAs for the different planets.

The Galaxy Map is the only place the planets are shown in orbit order, even though the engine doesn't then render the system in any sort of astronomical sense - as stated above, they don't actually orbit the star(s). They do seem to be to scale on the galaxy map, to a certain degree, so you can often see a single small planet and/or a single planet with a moon or two and determine their positions easily enough. It is the ones with multiple similar sized non-moon or multiple worlds with moons that make that method only partially effective.
I haven't had the chance to check whether the Glyph address numbering cross-references with those obvious position numbers.

I also name the planets with a numbered suffix. But i don't care for a specific order. So i just have a look at the 'ESC' --> discovery tab where you see the planets of the system and then i start to give the visually biggest planet number 1 and the smallest one get the highest number.
