Keyboard + mouse or gamepad?
What are you using when playing NMS?
I prefer gamepad for controlling the ship, but keyboard and mouse when on foot.

I prefer keyboard and mouse, though flight control with K&M are very sluggish but having the starship turn like a car with the gamepad go against all my flight simulator reflexes so it's a no-go for me, I just make do with autopilot...

I have always played with KB/M. It works great for me, but very comfortable with it after 4000+ hours. I never even tried a controller. Maybe inventory control is not that bad, but always seemed like it would be much more complicated to do it with a controller.

Have not noted any problems with steering my ship but I also try to avoid a lot of ship combat because it does not seem that fun to me. M/KB works for ship combat, but have no data to compare it to controller.

Edit: to a great extent it probably comes down to your preference. With rare exception, I like M/KB for most games. If you regularly use controllers in other games, you may find more comfort with a controller.

I've always played with keyboard and mouse and this suits me just fine. I've never played with a gamepad.

I've heard this a few times; I think it's a generational thing.

I figure it's all you kids growing up with consoles that makes ship combat easier with a controller; I've been a keyboard/mouse guy since I traded my Atari for a PC. My brother and I used to call the NES controller a "joystick", and we played Mario Brothers (the one before "Super Mario Brothers") in the arcade... I'm old.

I own a few gamepads, but I really only ever used them for fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct and of course, Street Fighter... and that claymation one that was so awesome, 30 years ago.

Anywho, yeah. I think it's because the old greybeards like myself never really got into the whole "gaming on the couch" thing... we use keyboard and mouse because "it's on the computer"; gamepads and joysticks and whatnot are for the "kids' games" on the TV.

(Note: there's no judgement in these words; I'm old, and I'm describing how I think about things, not what those things actually are. I'm well aware that today's playstations and xboxes are much more than the old Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega ever were... for starters, they're online, which wasn't even conceivable when the game systems I grew up with were new... mostly because "online" hadn't been invented yet.)

Personally I love using my Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma, it has buttons on the bottom I use to control the roll of the ship and extra buttons between the triggers and bumpers which I can use to cycle ship power mode easier.

On foot I use kbm its best way to play. I highly recommend getting a controller with extra buttons under the controller makes games so much nicer to play.

i only play permadeeth mode so only keyboard + mouse for me, if im gonna die "due to bug that i had many situations i would die, for example taking of and my starship becomes pinball from trees until its destroyed and i die" then i can hit esc fast to pause then game, alt tab and kill tast to avoid losing my 5 or more years save game i keep playing... starting from zero i think i would never recover if i lose my save lol lol, so not touching gamepad in this game )

i use a controller for pretty much everything... some things, though, have to be done with the keyboard (eg: making your terrain modification beam larger or smaller)... using a keyboard allows me to sit back and play without hurting myself leaning up for the kbd/mouse and being too close to the monitors to see them clearly...

But...but...but...if you don't lean forward in fights til you are inside the monitor, you CAN'T SEE AROUND THE EDGES OF THE BEZEL!! :steamhappy::steamfacepalm:

I use a gamepad for ship flight and Kbd/Mouse everywhere and my year of birth starts with 196... so nope, not a generational thing. Did the same in GTA IV and V/O. If the game has on-foot an vehicle control, I'll do it, if it is supported. Otherwise will stick to kbd/m.

Inventory management in NMS is pretty horrible with a controller IMO.

Since I'm more used to playing with a (customizing the default) keyboard and mouse configurations, I usually stick to those. :winter2019happybulb:
Except, ofc, if for ex. it's Street Fighter or a similar sort of game in which I was more used to use a console compatible controller, like I used to use upon my Sega MegaDrive days during my teenager years (or Sega Genesis, if upon the American continent).

Quick side note: I've recently returned to NMS (No Man's Sky) and apart having to reconfigure my previous customizations a tad due to during my (2 years) playing hiatus there were some game's updates that developed new activities and/or skills that now needed some attending / fixing.
Although I'm still undecided if should proceed with my previous saves or simply start over from scratch. :baa:

Every generalization has its outliers; anecdotal evidence aside, I think the kids have us beat on growing up with a controller in their hands.

gamepad for everything except k/m in derelict freighters, and big inventory organizing.

gamepad in flight, keyboard and mouse on foot
