Have not noted any problems with steering my ship but I also try to avoid a lot of ship combat because it does not seem that fun to me. M/KB works for ship combat, but have no data to compare it to controller.
Edit: to a great extent it probably comes down to your preference. With rare exception, I like M/KB for most games. If you regularly use controllers in other games, you may find more comfort with a controller.

I've heard this a few times; I think it's a generational thing.
I figure it's all you kids growing up with consoles that makes ship combat easier with a controller; I've been a keyboard/mouse guy since I traded my Atari for a PC. My brother and I used to call the NES controller a "joystick", and we played Mario Brothers (the one before "Super Mario Brothers") in the arcade... I'm old.
I own a few gamepads, but I really only ever used them for fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct and of course, Street Fighter... and that claymation one that was so awesome, 30 years ago.
Anywho, yeah. I think it's because the old greybeards like myself never really got into the whole "gaming on the couch" thing... we use keyboard and mouse because "it's on the computer"; gamepads and joysticks and whatnot are for the "kids' games" on the TV.
(Note: there's no judgement in these words; I'm old, and I'm describing how I think about things, not what those things actually are. I'm well aware that today's playstations and xboxes are much more than the old Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega ever were... for starters, they're online, which wasn't even conceivable when the game systems I grew up with were new... mostly because "online" hadn't been invented yet.)
On foot I use kbm its best way to play. I highly recommend getting a controller with extra buttons under the controller makes games so much nicer to play.
Inventory management in NMS is pretty horrible with a controller IMO.
Except, ofc, if for ex. it's Street Fighter or a similar sort of game in which I was more used to use a console compatible controller, like I used to use upon my Sega MegaDrive days during my teenager years (or Sega Genesis, if upon the American continent).
Quick side note: I've recently returned to NMS (No Man's Sky) and apart having to reconfigure my previous customizations a tad due to during my (2 years) playing hiatus there were some game's updates that developed new activities and/or skills that now needed some attending / fixing.
Although I'm still undecided if should proceed with my previous saves or simply start over from scratch.
Every generalization has its outliers; anecdotal evidence aside, I think the kids have us beat on growing up with a controller in their hands.
