I like the sentinels, since they are rather new, look cool and are very versatile.
Edit: I didn't completely answer your question. Pros/cons of each ship are detailed here: https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Starship
Best ship, best Multitool, best resources and so on will be determined by your way of playing the game. At least for me it is. Right now, I'm looking for an Atlantid or Experimental Multitool for mining and scanning. Bloody hard to find one...
It all depends on what you want to do
Personally I favor the sentinels ships. And yes, they can hover.
The shields ARE as tough as a Hauler, and the firepower can be made darned close to a fully buffed fighter. Maneuverability is equivalent to a Solar, and the target profile is smaller (unless you favor one of those huge "wing thing" Royals, for some weird reason.)
And in my experience, you don't really miss the 15 slot advantage that that a fully expanded Hauler has ... at least, not if your personal Inventory is already rocking 120.
They perform best in combat.
The inventory (hauler) is still more than big enough, especially when fully upgraded.
Landing cost (explorer or shuttle) is not really an issue once you have some launch thruster upgrades.
When I want to warp long distances (explorer), I use my freighter with almost 6000 ly range.
Exotics and solar ships aren't for me, because of the long landing animation.
It drives me mad.

are from my point of view comparable alternatives if one wants hover ability
It is true that a fully upgraded sentinel ship has a little more DPS than a fully upgrade fighter, but not to much to make any real difference, which is true for all ships types and all stats.
From a cargo capacity point of view, there is absolutely no difference.
Note that these are all playstyle-specific choices. I'm not a fighter jockey, so I don't care about the tweaks and quirks that make those ships preferable to some.
I would suggest getting at least one of each (you can have up to 12 ships in your "stable") and trying them out. Buy a stack of emergency maps from the cartographer in the station, "rescue" a few ships, and take them for a spin to see how that class feels to you.
Yup. The Sentinel ships can hover in place. The drawbacks: you need to go to a dissonant planet from time to time for supplies and they use some unique parts.
Before that I only flew Explorers or Fighters because of the cockpit visibility basically. Some Haulers look cool but the visibility is bad. It was the deciding factor for me.
