There is nothing to "fix" . But there are indeed room for quality of life improvements. Some mods are really good, though I only use two kind of mods : Making the game even prettier and making it even harder. Some are awesome, if you have self control, go mods all the way.
Would it cross inventories (Suit, Ship, Exocraft, Freighter, Containers)?
Alpha-numeric on name or by resource/artifact type?
FYI, you can currently name your containers and put things away in any order you want.
For years, I have used:
0=plants
1=odds and ends
2=metals
3=Nutrition
4=Overflow- temp storage
5= Crafting items
6= Gases
7= Crafting rocks
8= Water stuff
9= Never used
I always keep Di-Hy in the freighter inventory (to make fuel)
Tritium on my Ship
Basic resources that are easy to find and used a lot in my suit inventory
I never had trouble finding anything, but I keep a tight ship.
I do agree that enforced auto-sorting would not be a good idea.
if you do this (have both Ferrite Dust and Cobalt together) in a storage bin, you can build Ion Batteries in that storage bin... if you do not have all needed recipe ingredients in the same storage bin, you have to build in suit/ship/exocraft/freighter inventory and then move the end product to the desired storage bin...
sorting has the potential to mess this up or at least break the visual representation of the recipes and their products... we have enough complaints about automatic mission selection based on triggers (aka the well known "NMS keeps changing my mission" ""defect"")... (auto)sorting inventory could bring more of that type of complaint... yeah, no thanks...
On the ground if you are close to exocars keep all the cars close by and you simply transfer stuff back and forth to them using the menus too.
You can also now filter items using the tabs on the ship and suit inventories which is great.
Arguably using a controller the auto stacking and transfer items is more intuitive than keyboard. However the mouse can be accurate for placing items in empty slots and quickly shuffling things around. I prefer the controller its just simpler and when you learn and know the shortcut keys commands (all info for button commands are displayed in every pop up menu) Like for example double tap the triangle and items go from suit to ship instantly. Or from the ship back to the suit. No need to drag and drop or click and open another inventory. X usually splits stacks halving each time.
Personally, I don't care what method it is, just so long as it's predictable.
