Is it worth $30?
Is it all clans and griefers?
Can I just go off an explore as a single player, or is multiplayer a core function like an MMO?
Is it intuitive, or will I need a bachelor's degree in NMS in order to advance?
So far, it looks like technical issues (scary to a computer idiot like me) and wanting more depth... which is a nearly universal complaint about games
*Edit: I will say that in my early NMS days, having a friend playing with me showing me the ropes and explaining things was very helpful.
It is definitely worth $30. It is well worth $60, so $30 is a no-brainer if you like space sandbox games.
I despise multiplayer, so I will not buy a game that requires it. NMS doesn't require MP at all, though you can play MP if you want, though I understand that it's quite buggy since it was added on after-the-fact of the development of most of the game. One note: By default MP and PvP is turned on with every save you start, for some reason, so you'll want to go into those settings and turn off whatever you don't want turned on.
The game has a step-by-step tutorial that starts from the moment you start a save. The tutorial blends seamlessly into the game's first quest, should you choose to continue it. That said, once you know what you're doing, you can disable the tutorial so it doesn't run every time you start a new save.
Oh, and I have had zero technical issues since I started playing during the last 50% sale in April, and I do NOT by any means have a fancy computer. Mine is quite old, in fact, and it runs the game fine, even with a few mods installed now.
* There are no clans
* PvP can be turned off in your network setting. No body can screw with you with you don't let them.
* Multi-player is a very basic coop with up to 32 players per instance. The game universe is absurdly larger, in general you will only see other players if you are looking for them.
* The game is best played solo
* There is a step learning curve in the beginning, some things can be non-intuitive, but there are a lot of guides out there, if you get stuck you can find answers if you know how to look for them. You might die a lot at the beginning, but on standard difficult death is a minor inconvenience, you can recover any items you lost from your grave.
In general the game is a causal exploration and building game with a story line that is basically an extended tutorial that leads you different game mechanics. You can choose to ignore most of it. This is not an RPG, your character is not a hero or a villain. This is not a FPS in the normal sense, there is combat, but you can ignore most of it if you choose. You can do what ever you want when ever you want.
NMS is always broken when they are pushing new updates and expeditions. Everyone screams for a few weeks like they just lost a leg. HG works their butts off to fix all of the errors and then it's all perfectly fine again.
My opinion is that it is worth full price when you consider that I have well over 5,000 hours in this game. Can play it on my Steam Deck, Windows and Mac Mini.
It is mostly single player. You can change to multi player at any time during game play. Most of us just stick with single as we tend to have less issues.
You don't get stuck anywhere in the game. You can move on and bypass anything you want or at least till after you leave the system for the first time. There is a very important part you need to travel the systems first. But if you follow the story line, you get everything for free as you go. Or with the difficulty settings that you can change at any time to and fro during game play, you can have it all or make it harder on yourself.
It sounds to me like you will enjoy it.
See you (or not) out among the stars
