If you want to start a new game w/out the story, make sure to select CUSTOM and regardless of preset you pick, down towards the bottom of the settings is "Tutorial" set that to DISABLED.
Your game will start out with everything you need to experience everything but the story. You will have to answer the communicator otherwise your HUD/Radar will be useless and that beeping will become incredibly annoying.
After answering the communicator, just don't fly to the quest marker, simply play the game.
I typically skip the 2 main quests unless I have a reason to do them up to a point. There are other side quests I always complete because of blueprints or quest items. But none of that is required.
Basically what @Geldric said....jinx!
I was hoping it would also remove all those "tooltips" that keep poping in place of the missions objectives...
In fact when skipping the story the game will do nothing BUT keep asking you to go to the marker they gave to kick off the quest.
as a newbie you 'should' do the tutorial at least once to learn the how-to basics of the early game ...many many new players want to skip the tutorial cos it's 'baby steps' but it's less a tutorial and more an 'interactive' first steps.
trust me ...if you think the tutorial is beneath you now, imagine how it will be months from now, when you still lack basic knowledge other newbies gained on their first day
Wander! Explore! Have fun! xD
Why are you even worried about the story?! This game is more open ended than any I've ever seen before or since. Just do what you want to.
In fact, in my current custom 'hard mode' save I started the story lines for the end rewards after I had already unlocked all the build-ables and so each of the 'terminal quests' only gave me upgrade modules when they would have normally unlocked something else.
So in short, you should be fine on perma skipping the tutorials.
