How to trade items with players

Doogle says I can dump items in my friends inventory when near eachother. But even when we are facing eachoher, touching stomachs, so to speak, we cannot do this. What are we doing wrong?
It would be nice to return loot when accidentally opening my friends containers and vice versa...

in your inventory use the quick transfer button on the item you want to give to another player, the options will include any nearby players

Thank you for your quick reply.

We have tried that. the default key is X for us. But this does not work. When I do that the only destination that comes up, is my ship. The same for my friend.

We are in a group and can use eachothers structures, but in the NMS friendlist, neither of us is listed. Could that be related?

You don't need to be friends with someone to transfer stuff to them, just near each other. Try doing it without being grouped. Maybe grouping up interferes? I've transferred things to other people many times, some while grouped I'm pretty sure, but I'm spitballing here.

If you access you're friends containers, you will see the contents of your containers.
