MAKE'M JIGGLE!!!!!
Too many people make assumptions on gender based on most common form even when gender doesn't exist for these fictional beings.
The only things that have a gender are the Void Mother, and animals, and I've had animals where the reported gender was..... None.
Although I agree with you in a general sense; a male body plan being the default for "genderless" has it's own problems. Even if Princess_Daystar didn't want to play as a woman and wanted to play as a genderless being, her options are still all "default male bodyplan". The closest she can have to what she wants is the 3rd body plan, which is just "tall child" frankly. That lack of choice is both bad on a societal level (playing into the very same assumptions that you think you're arguing against), and on a player level. Any game with character customisation; the more customisation, the better the player experience.
Players asking for some more feminine forms in the game isn't going to ruin it, I don't think there's any reason to always shoot this down. It's also not going to stop it from being genderless, if you are genuinely concerned about that. Boobs ARE genderless, everyone has them and everyone has the capacity to grow 'em bigger if their hormones or conditions they have (like gynaecomastia) allow it. So there's not really a legitimate reason for the game to lack a body plan (or two) with a bit more of a hint at a chest, for any player who wants that.
All this to say that I fully agree with OP. I'd also like to see HG tackle "How can we give players better self-expression options". It bothers me that there's no actual real distinction between the races besides the head part. I want so many more different body part options. Crazy alien stuff like duck feet, tail parts, etc. At the very least, I would like to have access to the full range of Traveller faces and parts that the rest of the game has access to. There's some decent looking Travellers out there, but we get the worst choices.
Thank you. You said how i feel for the most part.
Im also including faces in the lack of options, theres a single gek, and a single traveler face that i use because they are more in my eyes feminine. the rest are all male.
more options are always good, and letting players choose from a mass variety would be very nice.
Sadly, I think you missed the entire point about this specifically I made in my reply, but I don't think I'm too surprised.
Anyway, let players request what they want and what would make a better gameplay experience for them. It doesn't hurt you and your game. You don't have to choose any of the options you don't like, whereas currently some players DO have to, which is entirely the subject of this topic, be that in race or shape.
Asking for more choice, so players can find something they like and pick that, is not a bad thing. There's no need to act up about this.
Plus sounds to me like OP is fully aware of those cosmetic heads, yes. And still finds them lacking, which I think is totally fair. It's a couple of helmets that are mostly just clones of Anomaly NPCs. That's not much in the way of choice.
I'll be honest, a part of me wants to be glib and say "I just want more furries to play as!" because comparing the game to Starbound's racial options does kinda sound like that, but in truth, I really just want characters that are conventionally cute, conventionally cool, or "normal-looking" conventionally.
I suppose the Gek are conventionally cute, and the Vy'Keen are conventionally cool, but they look kind of off to me for some reason still... I went with the only character appearance that really resonates with me as a "mysterious traveler" kind of aesthetic, but the actual Travelers look, well, really bad.
...Also, the only way to earn Quicksilver is through the Expeditions, and I am allergic to multiplayer (that isn't with my friends) and PVP. So I'm already salty about locking content behind participating in them, but every time someone like me complains about it, we get dogpiled by people who wanted the game to be stressful like EVE Online from the get-go so I don't really feel like turning my topic into that. I'm only bringing it up to mention that even if they sold a decent-looking option in the shop, I wouldn't appreciate having it gated behind something that spikes my anxiety and sucks the fun out of playing.
Our visors are black from shade protection.
Heres an idea want to play a girl. Name your char a girl name not lulzc0c3su33er69
What I've wanted for a long time is more clothing options, which we got with the Autophages. Also, personally, I freaking love the new race. They feel like full-on robots over the Korvax who honestly just seem to be giant empty sacks of nanites in the shape of people, and there's a decent variety of head shapes ALL of which have hooded options that change them pretty drastically.
If I had just one criticism about the new cosmetics it's that we don't get hood options for our other races (various heads would work just fine with them, they don't need to be available for all head attachment options like the weirdly-shaped Traveler heads), but maybe one day Hello Games will do that too.
Either way, I'm extremely satisfied with our new options. I've already found my favorite look in the game so far and previously I was always just the tiniest bit iffy about certain designs because the only armor I ever actually liked enough to keep using was the "Armoured" set... and that's great, but where's the variety in that? Just always using one style set? No thanks.
EDIT: Also, with the new robot limbs, we can put on Korvax if we want them to look like proper robots, which is great for people who do like the race.
