That is not what the update says.
In the darkness of deep space, fearsome Pirate Dreadnoughts cruise between the stars and terrorise merchant fleets. Confront them to rescue the civilians from certain death!
Even the odds against outlaw Dreadnoughts by swooping directly into their superstructure! Utilise all the precision and agility of your starship to strike at the vulnerable core of these huge, hulking capital ships.
Realise your raiding ambitions with explosive space combat. All capital ships – from outlaw dreadnoughts to merchant freighters – can now be reduced to stardust, allowing piratical pilots to earn additional scrap after looting each and every cargo pod. A brand-new combat HUD tracks the hull integrity of large vessels, allowing starship pilots to plan their attacks with precision.
----------------------------
You can attack the pirate dreadnaught with your personal ship while it attacks an NPC freighter and you can blow up NPC freighters. You can not attack enemy freighters with your freighter.
True, but it is a small step towards proper fleet battles. Whether or not they take the next step is yet to be seen.
With no way to prevent savegame freighter edits, i do not think this would be feasible. However i do not think that is in the dream of the game's vision. There are other games that do this really well. Eve Online, X4 foundations (if you assume carriers to be freighters) etc.
If one game has all the features one can experience in space, there will be no need to even buy other games. Similarly, if iPhone has everything that one needs as well as all the best business practices and best customer service and phone aesthetic design with variety and excellent software, why would anyone even by a samsung?
The pirate freighters are not available to players yet. But very likely something similar probably in future content.
But the new radical looking Pirate frigates can be yours if they survive the battle after the destruction of their commanding freighter. So you will need a space in your fleet to add those new frigates to your expanding and diverse fleet.
Here's an extract of the patch notes :
Probably something for the future. Plus the game consoles and player hardware needs to be able to cope with all that complexity. Star Citizen has taken years to develop multiplayer ship boarding and so on and they have a huge team. Hello Games seem to be carefully adding 'place holder' assets in the game, like larger interiors, increased ship sizes, VR all of which could provide content characters and players could run about on. I can't imagine Hello Games have not considered the possibilities of the game and all the procedural advantages in future content. One thing is for sure they have fun doing what they do and well. : D
You bought the wrong game if you wanted a lot of player ship to ship combat. This game has only recently even scratched the surface of space/on planet combat. And even that is pretty simple by comparison to games that focus on combat as a primary game loop.
This is an exploring game with a lot of sideshows added to it so it is more relevant to a larger portion of the game play world. If you got it for the combat...you did not do adequate research.
