Farming gases from plants and stuff is really inefficient also.
Not sure what you mean by "in the actual system". I do not recall seeing gas in any trade terminal and there is no star types, economy type, it dominant race that causes it to spawn.
Frigate missions frequently return with gas products, but us aksi very random.
Better still is to farm one gas and refine it into the other. Even better, if you buy one stack of one gas but need the other refine it. Also this is where farming (or buying trading) Oxygen makes great sense. If you refine any gas into another using oxygen, then you get out an equal amount of gas. Remember you can refine gas on the move using your exosuit if you have the upgrade fitted. Keep a stack of each gas in your Cargo slots and you will never go short.
If you do not want to set up a farm of your own then simply visit another player's farm. There are probably more Nitrogen farms so use them to refine the other gases. If you do not want to set up a small sized farm then just drop the atmosphere harvester and you do not need to find a gas hot spot.
But you get gases in small quantities by first scanning flora before shooting them, it's the 'secondary' substance marked in your visor at the end of the flora description.
