Good inventory management mods?
Hello,

I'm looking for one or multiple inventory management mods that make organization much easier. Something with transfer all, transfer like, "add more" without having to search for the item.

Additionally, if there are any great mods you yourself like, let me know what they are so I can look them up!

NMS already has the best inventory management of any game I play. What do you mean by "transfer all, transfer like, and add more"? The default is to transfer all, "like" is ambiguous, and so is "more". You can easily split stacks to transfer less than all.

The ability to sort items alphabetically would be a massive quality of life improvement for many of us. Unfortunately, I haven't seen anything that allows that, or that allows a way to search for items by keyword.

Inventory management mods I've seen are designed to increase stack sizes, increase ship inventory ranges, change the balance of general to tech slots (for harder play modes), or increase total inventory size for different storage types.

If you haven't already, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the different shortcut options that can ease moving stacks of items between storage types, at least one of which will autostack the moved item with any that already exist in the target storage.

I eventually ended up with a color-based system for my vault storage, and while that has helped with knowing where to go to drop off or pick up a given item type, it doesn't do anything at all for the biggest time sinks of exosuit, starship, and exocraft inventory management.

Thanks for the reply! I went ahead with a stack size mod to effectively reduce time in all inventory management functions. Much better

Recommend increasing your personal inventory to max number of slots to reduce micromanagement (using goatfungus). But yeah, inventory mgmt is pretty old school.

There's one good feature though ... if an inventory is full but each slot is not full, anything you add will go into existing slots, which is handy.

I use just the opposite approach. Store everything in the storage containers so that it's all in one centralized location and easy to sort though. In my personal inventory I store only what I need regularly, and go to the freighter to get anything special that I end up needing.

In the ship it's pretty much just sodium and uranium. Any time I go to the freighter I throw anything that's collected in my inventories into storage. Unless you only use one ship/exocraft, using the ship/exocraft storage for anything except short-term storage means that is' inaccessible any time you switch.

The game automatically pulls items from storage that you need if you're on the freighter, which makes it easy to do upgrades repair there and never have to search for anything.

If I were to add one thing to inventory management it would be to add the one missing link remaining, which is being able to access storage from anywhere. I don't know why that's not possible. Maybe it is and I just haven't found the freighter upgrade to enable it yet?

The matter beam upgrade do allow to access the storage containers on your freighter from anywhere if you're in the same system. There are several sub-tabs on the Freighter tab that are easy to miss because they're covered by part of the interface.

Thanks! I thought there was a way to do it, but generally I'm not in the same system, unless I call my freighter to enter it, in which case, I'm already in the freighter and don't need it. :-)

That's essentially what I do as well. I've switched to using the freighter as main storage and grabbing a few stacks of re-fueling items for each of my weapons, engines, etc...

And yeah, as mentioned below, the matter beam upgrade is one of the best upgrades out there! I'm currently working to get the last warp drive addon so that my freighter can be called into any system regardless of class. Also bringing down the Minotaur with the autopilot AI can be helpful if you plan on fighting a lot of sentinels.

This game has pretty garbage inventory management
  • Can't sell items to market from your freighter or base inventory, while you're in your freighter and base and can simply move those items yourself
  • Can't refine items from freighter or base inventory, even though you're inside them.
  • No search feature
  • No sorting and auto stacking
  • Can't drag and drop items into modules, have to use a separate keybind for that
  • Multiple inventory windows spread out across a dozen screens, which makes the lack of these features horrible.
  • All interactions require holding down a button
  • Can't bring up 2 inventory windows at once, except for the one exception which isn't helpful (suit to cargo container).
  • No shift click or CTRL click

I didn't make these features up. Every one of them is in many other games. Most games have about half these, and some games have nearly all of them. This is probably the first game I've ever played with none of them.

I have a tab in my freighter for mods, a tab for basic resources, a tab for plants, a tab for relics, a tab for...

Great, they are organised. but there's no way of "send to Relics store" or whatever, you have to drag to freighter and then manually scroll through the containers until you get to the one you want to store it in. *for every item* (unless it's already stored there, then it stacks automatically). But yeah, organising inventory is probably the most time-consuming part of this game. needs alphabetical sorting, sorting by type of thing, etc

I wish all of those listed items were in here. I think the biggest sin is not having a sort and stack button. Unfortunately, since there seems to be no better interface mods, I downloaded a stacking mod and now each items stacks to 9999. Feels kind of cheesy but I think becomes a net positive instead of fiddling with an inadequate system which becomes a time sink.

Maybe in the past the game desperately needed mods for inventory - but you can have everything you ever need and a freighter now when you include the storage containers. We can even carry 10,000 of most materials which sounds insane when you compare the stack limits to release.

I think the main issue is that we have so much space now it's just annoying to move things from one menu another. Without sorting or management options it's cumbersome. Such as trying to empty out your inventory into the containers on your freighter with the beam access. I have the key presses memorized but even then the game will randomly slide through an unrelated tab instead.

I've said as much myself several times.

As I understand, our save files include our inventory, and those save files are XML. In the past I've used a save game editor that allowed rearranging inventory. So it seems like an external sorting tool should be a relatively easy modding project. I'm not that good with coding but I've thought it might be a worthwhile project. Don't expect me to actually do it, though.

Stand inside the entrance to your freighter base and you can then simply transfer things to containers from the pop-up menu. The new auto sort function, stacks similar items with similar items so you do not have to open actual container menus. Like you say an extra step is required transferring to freighter from the surface of a planet. If you are on a planet but your freighter is in the system and you have the Matter beam transfer tech installed, then you will have to switch through container menus to transfer. But if you have a lot of stuff in your suit or ship, a short flight or teleport to the freighter can be quicker. It's good to visit the freighter every so often anyhow, which is fun if you own one : )

There absolutely should be an auto sort option with inventory and storage. The fact that this game has such a HUGE amount of resources yet has not implemented such a basic feature is bizarre. I mean this would be a huge quality of life feature that quite frankly we deserve and it's not that much to ask on their end.
