Inventory management mods I've seen are designed to increase stack sizes, increase ship inventory ranges, change the balance of general to tech slots (for harder play modes), or increase total inventory size for different storage types.
If you haven't already, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the different shortcut options that can ease moving stacks of items between storage types, at least one of which will autostack the moved item with any that already exist in the target storage.
I eventually ended up with a color-based system for my vault storage, and while that has helped with knowing where to go to drop off or pick up a given item type, it doesn't do anything at all for the biggest time sinks of exosuit, starship, and exocraft inventory management.
Thanks for the reply! I went ahead with a stack size mod to effectively reduce time in all inventory management functions. Much better
There's one good feature though ... if an inventory is full but each slot is not full, anything you add will go into existing slots, which is handy.
In the ship it's pretty much just sodium and uranium. Any time I go to the freighter I throw anything that's collected in my inventories into storage. Unless you only use one ship/exocraft, using the ship/exocraft storage for anything except short-term storage means that is' inaccessible any time you switch.
The game automatically pulls items from storage that you need if you're on the freighter, which makes it easy to do upgrades repair there and never have to search for anything.
If I were to add one thing to inventory management it would be to add the one missing link remaining, which is being able to access storage from anywhere. I don't know why that's not possible. Maybe it is and I just haven't found the freighter upgrade to enable it yet?
Thanks! I thought there was a way to do it, but generally I'm not in the same system, unless I call my freighter to enter it, in which case, I'm already in the freighter and don't need it. :-)
That's essentially what I do as well. I've switched to using the freighter as main storage and grabbing a few stacks of re-fueling items for each of my weapons, engines, etc...
And yeah, as mentioned below, the matter beam upgrade is one of the best upgrades out there! I'm currently working to get the last warp drive addon so that my freighter can be called into any system regardless of class. Also bringing down the Minotaur with the autopilot AI can be helpful if you plan on fighting a lot of sentinels.
This game has pretty garbage inventory management
I didn't make these features up. Every one of them is in many other games. Most games have about half these, and some games have nearly all of them. This is probably the first game I've ever played with none of them.
Great, they are organised. but there's no way of "send to Relics store" or whatever, you have to drag to freighter and then manually scroll through the containers until you get to the one you want to store it in. *for every item* (unless it's already stored there, then it stacks automatically). But yeah, organising inventory is probably the most time-consuming part of this game. needs alphabetical sorting, sorting by type of thing, etc
I wish all of those listed items were in here. I think the biggest sin is not having a sort and stack button. Unfortunately, since there seems to be no better interface mods, I downloaded a stacking mod and now each items stacks to 9999. Feels kind of cheesy but I think becomes a net positive instead of fiddling with an inadequate system which becomes a time sink.
I think the main issue is that we have so much space now it's just annoying to move things from one menu another. Without sorting or management options it's cumbersome. Such as trying to empty out your inventory into the containers on your freighter with the beam access. I have the key presses memorized but even then the game will randomly slide through an unrelated tab instead.
As I understand, our save files include our inventory, and those save files are XML. In the past I've used a save game editor that allowed rearranging inventory. So it seems like an external sorting tool should be a relatively easy modding project. I'm not that good with coding but I've thought it might be a worthwhile project. Don't expect me to actually do it, though.
