Returning player, Sentinel update troubles (Or operator error)
(TLDR; Sentinel update not working as expected despite following various recommended methods)

HI, took a break from playing for a few updates, something I've done before, returning to the game usually goes trouble free, had a bit of weirdness after the Freighter update but didn't we all, so I was expecting for most things to drop into place quite readily, sadly either I'm being a muppet (always possible) or something is amiss.

Read up and watched play throughs etc of the Sentinel update, got a grip of what was needed and set off, Dissonant galaxy check, space station check, corrupted sentinels check, planet has life check, everything appears to be right.

Land on planet scan and find Radiant shards, apparently they can be mined, no problem, but mining only produces Ferrite dust not Radiant Shards. another bit of oddness is that when I approach the radiant shards they appear labelled as Steel?

So dumped my inventory of stuff, and moved out of range of the ship teleport , so that there could be no inventory shuffling going on behind my back, tried again and again only Ferrite dust appears in my inventory.

Spent a while crawling threads and google for a similar issue and didn't see it reported,, so must be a muppet.

Ok then, I'll have a bash at the dissonance resonators that I'd spotted, found a few shot them up and received nothing, killed dozens of sentinels, large and small corrupted quads, and again the drop is Atlantideum, no inverted mirrors or echo locators.

Gave up, warped out of there, changed systems, by this time I've been trying all the things I could think of for about 12 hrs.
Not wanting to go down the same road, found the correct planet in the right system and attacked a few on the surface and took this issue to orbit, fought off the waves killed the sentinel frigate and actually got the drop that's supposed to give me a crashed sentinel ship location, located item in inventory pressed E and... nothing, no text, no sound, no nav marker.
Fine, I'll try that again just in case I'd messed up somehow, so now I've destroyed 5 Sentinel capital ships across various systems, all Dissonant, as yet aside from the Capital ship drops that don't seem to work, I've found non of the other items mentioned.

Don't think I've missed anything, normal mode game, career is complete as far as lore goes, maxed out everything, one thing that may be an issue is that I'm in galaxy 50, but it's never been an issue before.
So am I missing the obvious? Just unlucky? Or is something amiss.

yeah that lot ain't normal Lol
verify the integrity of your game files in steam
if you have any mods installed, remove them until you can get updated versions

Lots of people have posted about sentinel ships found in many different galaxies. I'm currently playing in galaxy 104, but have played quite a lot in various galaxies that I left bases in my exploration of dissonant planets, mostly 90 and 99, but also 10 where my settlement is, so do not believe it is the galaxy that is causing your issues.

Hey, verifying was one of the first things i did, the only file replaced was the mod.txt as normal.
The mods I updated before I restarted the game or removed if no update available. I'm not using any weird or merged mods either. I try to keep a tight reign on mods, just to prevent to many update hassles.
I've also disabled the mods but nothing regarding the drops etc changed.
Thanks for the input all the same, I think I'll have to try a fresh game and see how it goes, if it works in a new save it has to be something wonky in the current 700hr save :(

any mods that affect the rewards table might cause the wrong drops to be given, that or currupted gamefiles are the only reasons i can think that might cause your problem

^^^ THIS -

REMOVE ALL MODS - start a NEW save and see what happens on Corrupt Sentinel planets.

First things to do when returning to NMS after a long pause (more than a patch):
1 - wait for a couple week after the new patch before trying to load your legacy save (give them time to fix the most obvious bugs from the new patch first)
2 - verify the game files with steam
3 - go into your mod folder and restore the "disableallmods" text file, then go into your "mods" folder that's in the same directory and delete everything inside....
(It's easy to forget you had some mods after a long time and they'll be most likely outdated if not harmfull).
4 - go watch some videos on the current meta.... your old maxed stuff has probably been nerfed if it was the "best" set-up a few patches ago.... so you're gonna have to figure out what's the new best set-up you gonna have to farm for.....
5 - go grab some coordinates for the new MT/starships/frigates/younameit.... you gonna pass your first days back in NMS portaling to replace your old junk with the new fancy ones...
6 - Phone your friends & family you're gonna miss them but something came up and you wont be in touch for the next few weeks....

@Guh-hey-hey I did pretty much all of that :) (after all been making and adding mods to games since long before steam was a thing)
Started a new save out of curiosity and yeah there's something very wrong with that save.

I should be mad but I'm not, most games in my library are early access or dev builds, so though on the whole I have very little hassle, I am prepared for that hassle if/when it comes. ( all is not lost either, I still have the save and a save editor, so when the time is right i can shift ships etc between saves)

Plus after 700 hrs on the same save it was getting a bit meh, with little to do except wander the universe.

So thanks for the input all. Starting again is more fun than I thought it'd be :)

Yeah, this definitely sounds mod related as Steel has NEVER been a thing in NMS. A clean install of the game without mods and reloading and resaving that file might salvage the file. It's unusually good like that. With NMS I generally recommend smaller, mostly cosmetic mods if you want them. Given the frequency of updates, they break a lot.

I've actually seen "steel" as the label on some of the breakable containers on the abandoned freighters a few times. Might be some sort of placeholder name as I'm running a vanilla game with no mods at all.
