I've been taking out ground sentinels from the air for quite some time. You just have to make low slow passes.
There's also an option to allow landing during battle, which I always enable. That seems like a silly limitation to me.
IIRC, you have to either re-key the auto-target or disable it.
I don't remember what it is, but I do remember that it's not very obvious.
