I thought somebody would be asking something like: Why does a starship operated by an AI the size of my fist have a cockpit (at all and) big enough to fit me, anyway?!
Edit: Almost forgot: You can change the camera from cockpit to chase ship, to get rid of it while flying. If there isn't a mod yet that lets you remove it from the exterior, there probably will be soon.
I was just going to say look into Nexus mod, someone is bound to make one for it but it seems there's already one according to Krash
You can easily key bind the camera toggle views to a key. Then it's just one key press to change camera while flying. On a controller you can set the key to a button or have it set as a long press on a button. Fun.
This implies that you aren't actually looking to the outside, but you are looking through monitors, that are connected to some external scanner positioned in front of the ship.
So that red glow is just flair used to indicate that you are seeing things through a 'camera' rather than through a window.
While it's cool in theory, in practicality, it's an obstruction to my view.
