PS4 style controler not working again??
my controler (a ps4 controler) isnt working with the game again. every time theres a massive update it stops responding to the game. but it works on every other game just fine. are the devs not testing it or something?? because this happens every time a new version of the game (new expansion) comes out... and only gets fixed after a few months at best. anyone else having problems with this???

There are numerous recent threads that all say to re-download the official steam configuration set-up for your controller type. The game added L-Stick click control for saving personal records. A few other minor alterations with Interceptor.

If you have previously customised your controller, re-download the official default controller set-up for your controller. Apply that and the customise buttons on top of the default. You might even save it as a template. That way you can be sure Action Layers and buttons work as expected. There are also some community saved updates of set-ups for various controllers for the Interceptor update, which if you apply those may save some time. Definitely delete the old set-up that is causing buttons to fail. Then it all should work fine. Best method is to do it all in Steam Big Picture Mode.

Simply, customise a new setup based on the official hello games controllers, which must first be re-downloaded, as they have been updated.

Unfortunately Steam recently re-launched the UI of the controller configuration interface, which actually is okay but a bit slow. The launch also coincided with the Interceptor update release which made things all a little confusing to find. There also is very little information from Steam how to best use the new UI, especially for new players unfamiliar with setting up controllers. It is relatively simple of course once you have learned what does what. Not great from Valve as it all seems a bit rushed.

I haven't tried the most recent update, but typically the official controller configs for PS4 controller are missing all the trigger buttons so half the stuff doesn't work until you fix it.

Other controller types (xbox etc) have other buttons missing in the official configs.

No idea why it isn't fixed so many years later, guess it's just way down on the priority list for whomever's desk it's sitting on.

just to clarify the above, here's the procedure i've been posting for several months when there are problems with controllers... it is written for xbox controllers but so far has worked for all others, too... just look at the UI for the proper buttons to press in steps 9, 10, and 11...

  1. load into the game
  2. open Options on the first screen OR go to the Options tab in-game
  3. select Controls
  4. at the top select Remap Controls
  5. bottom left Configure Gamepad via Steam - this loads the steam controller tool.
if you get a black box here, click the Maximize button and then you can hit the Restore button to return to a window.
  6. at the top, where it says Current Layout, click the selector below (just above the View Layout and Edit Layout options)
  7. select the Recommended tab at the top
  8. select the proper Official Configuration for No Man's Sky that matches your controller
  9. hit the A button to select that config
  10. hit the X button to apply that config
  11. hit B for done and to back out - this returns you to the game
  12. now your controller should be using the latest layout template and everything should be operational again.

are you talking about my procedure that Guyver8 posted? if yes, then maybe also check in the steam NMS properties that you have "Use default settings" selected in the Controller tab...

i cannot find it, now, like i used to but there was a place in the Steam Settings where you could select which controllers to support... at one time i had disabled all of them except Xbox Controller but i had problems with some games so i went back and reset so that all controllers were included... even Steam Input... with the recent changes Steam did to the interface, things have been moved or eliminated and i'm just not sure where these items are located any more...
Steam general settings will permit you to calibrate your controller AND choose which controller manufacturers are supported for the game. Including a generic controller. If unsure set that as Default for steam input.

Initially it is best to do setting up with BIG PICTURE mode active on steam as it is designed to work better with controllers.

Once the above is done THEN set up your controller remapping on a per-game procedure. Select the game then MANAGE the game properties choosing your controller.

Also it helps to reset all in-game keys to their defaults and then change controller buttons using the defaults which helps minimise any changes in future.

Once steam remapping is opened you have a choice to see OTHER controller types. Pressing the correct tool tip button (help info on screen) should display other controllers like playstation and community saved set-ups. Otherwise there will only be official set-ups displayed.

Important to note that you can only delete old set-ups if they are not already in use by the controller you are currently using. Previous set-ups you may have saved can also be locally saved, in cache or on the community saved lists, so take care to back up important saved set-ups and delete any you no longer need with care, to remove what does not need to be auto loaded by steam when the game runs.

Once you have got a set-up working or simply stick with in-game keys as defaults and use an official set-up, then everything works well.

With the recent Valve controller UI (steam configuration) you can now enter text using the controllers, without needing a keyboard on PC. Not great but it works. Still using a keyboard to enter text will always be far easier but it is an improvement. It's just very slow to enter text using buttons.

The official works for my wireless PS4. I have the proper buttons shown in game and all my triggers work.

I still need to mod it. I like to unify all my controls so the same buttons in general are used in all crafts. I also turn on toggling the scanner so I don’t have to hold anything down, And I switched the run and scan. As normally in most games I have run in the opposite analog button press. It defaults to the right but I control movement with the left analog so prefer that to be my sprint enable that is tied to movement.

It’s actually not a bad default setup. It’s totally playable with the official controller layout.
