I guess you're an apartment-dweller? :-)
I don't bother focusing on just finding crashes or any other aspect like that. I prefer just roaming about and letting the game put things into view.
If you want to find that perfect ship, then sitting at a space station or trading post is the best way. There are only so many ships in a system though so if you don't see anything interesting it's best to move on to the next system.
So tell me why I should spend 4 real-life hours trying to locate a crashed ship in a system when it turns out I could acquire the exact same ship in 5 minutes by just staying inside the station ?
It's not about the ship being damaged or not, I would fix it if it was worth the investment in the first place, but why would I waste a considerable amount of my personal time for absolutely no gain since all the ships you find crashed on the ground are the same that those who enter the station on a regular basis ?
First playthrough: I scrapped / sold every broken ship I found, saving up until I had enough to buy a nice ship from a station visitor.
Just play NMS in whatever manner suits you. The devs kindly inserted multiple ways to skin every cat.
I mostly use the crashed ships to scrap, which yields units once I've sold the scrap parts and storage augments if I'm lucky.
As mentioned above, finding and claiming crashed ships is something I may, or may not, do while exploring planets anyway. I did once fully fix up a crashed ship I found on an early save, that was a few updates back and the resources required have changed a bit since then - these days it would need to be a very special ship for me to bother to do that now.
The sentinel ones don't have lots of broken/blocked slots and also tend to have more slots than typical, but having tried them I have gone back to my fully upgraded exotic as it feels a better all rounder to me.
Yet it's still somehow the fastest method because all the others have variable outcomes which make them take even more time for the same result.
You should play the game the way I do, in absolutely every way.
Also, eat ketchup. Put it on carrots and celery. Don't ask why, just do.
Something that is a lot easier for new players that don't know yet how to make tons of money but know how to gather resources.
Not sure why you would be looking for them if you have the money though. I just sell the ones I find without even repairing.
