Crashed ships ? How and why ?
I'll begin with the "why" actually, but what's the point of hunting for crashed ships when everytime I somehow manage to find some, it's three duplicates of a ship I had already seen in the system space station before ? If it's the same ship, why wouldn't I directly buy it from the station, with all of the slots intact ?

Two, what's the most optimal way of looking for crash sites (besides the Nautilon scanner) ? If I buy outpost maps, I almost never get sent to an observatory and when I do, it's giving me off-planet coordinates for ruinsinstead of crash sites.
When I buy distress signal maps, it's nearly always an abandoned outpost, and sometimes a crashed Freighter.

So I've wondering what's the point of going through all of that struggle when I can just sit down in a station and watch the ships fly in and out on their own.

A few years ago this was a different game. Stuff was a bit harder to find, getting a free broken S class ship was great news! Now with a slow nerfage of any difficulty to getting units, crashed ships not so exciting. For me, the intercepters pretty much finished off bothering with crashed ships, unless it's a squid or a guppy. If I was on a permadeath run or new to the game, that might be different. Or if I set up a certain set of rules for my run.

The real answer is just play like you want and don't bother overthinking the why of stuff in this game. It will just give you a headache.

Some people would rather rent an apartment and call the landlord to fix every little thing. Others would rather buy a house and call a plumber if/when their DIY project turns the drip under the sink into a flooded kitchen.

I guess you're an apartment-dweller? :-)

I tend to find at least one crash on a planet every time I just cruise about and explore.

I don't bother focusing on just finding crashes or any other aspect like that. I prefer just roaming about and letting the game put things into view.

If you want to find that perfect ship, then sitting at a space station or trading post is the best way. There are only so many ships in a system though so if you don't see anything interesting it's best to move on to the next system.

I have the time and resources to fully fix the ship. However I also have 200+ million units and absolutely nothing to spend them on besides buying ships.

So tell me why I should spend 4 real-life hours trying to locate a crashed ship in a system when it turns out I could acquire the exact same ship in 5 minutes by just staying inside the station ?
It's not about the ship being damaged or not, I would fix it if it was worth the investment in the first place, but why would I waste a considerable amount of my personal time for absolutely no gain since all the ships you find crashed on the ground are the same that those who enter the station on a regular basis ?

Your conclusion: yes, lol. The game provides multiple pathways to success. The distress signal maps have RNG to what type of site you get. Then, the ship you find when that roll "works" has its own RNG attached, making it even rare-er to get anything specific. The maps do seem obsolete, after you're able to build various exocraft.

First playthrough: I scrapped / sold every broken ship I found, saving up until I had enough to buy a nice ship from a station visitor.

Just play NMS in whatever manner suits you. The devs kindly inserted multiple ways to skin every cat.

The Minotaur scanner can look for distress beacons - they can either be crashed ships or crashed freighters, if you only want to find crashed ships and it has found a freighter wait for the scanner to cool down and scan again.

I mostly use the crashed ships to scrap, which yields units once I've sold the scrap parts and storage augments if I'm lucky.

As mentioned above, finding and claiming crashed ships is something I may, or may not, do while exploring planets anyway. I did once fully fix up a crashed ship I found on an early save, that was a few updates back and the resources required have changed a bit since then - these days it would need to be a very special ship for me to bother to do that now.

The sentinel ones don't have lots of broken/blocked slots and also tend to have more slots than typical, but having tried them I have gone back to my fully upgraded exotic as it feels a better all rounder to me.

Its fun to find a crashed site because that specific ship will always spawn there. Why do you want an alternative to the Nautilon scanner?

The Nautilon only works on planet with deep enough water (obviously) and it's unbelivably slow and boring to pilot which makes it a chore to go to the crash site, even if you land your ship at the closest possible point.
Yet it's still somehow the fastest method because all the others have variable outcomes which make them take even more time for the same result.

The only time this is a problem would be in a system with no deep water planets. That's possible but very rare in my experience.

So then the question would be... if it doesn't interest you, why bother with it? The game has a crazy amount of other ways for you to make money and nanites or find a ship you want.

Hence why I made a post asking if there was literally any reason to bother with it in the first place.

You should play the game the way I do, in absolutely every way.

Also, eat ketchup. Put it on carrots and celery. Don't ask why, just do.

Your problem if you don't mind spending 4 hours doing something that can be done in 10 minutes, not mine.

It is just another way to buy the ship with resources instead of units.

Something that is a lot easier for new players that don't know yet how to make tons of money but know how to gather resources.

Not sure why you would be looking for them if you have the money though. I just sell the ones I find without even repairing.

Lol duh, cos they're FREE...and easy enough to find...and they're FREE
