Storms just make them easier to see because their glow cuts through the storm.
This is correct.
I tested this in my game by modding the probability of S-Class to 100%, at which point ALL interceptors were S-class, thus proving that they do use the same variable as the other things.
Honestly, I'm glad we had this discussion, because I wasn't even aware you could FIND the crashed ships in abandoned systems. The echo locators and Dreadnaught AI Fragments have always failed when I tried them there.
It NEVER occurred to me to try fighting waves of the corrupted sentinels to see if I got different results.
Echo Locators locate Harmonic Camps and do not function at all if used in a system that has no camps (even if there are crashes in that system). They do not point to another system on the galaxy map if they fail.

The sentinel dreadnoughts drop it. Obviously I haven't destroyed one since that became a thing.
They only have a chance of dropping from a single combat encounter type, no other encounter categories can drop them, and none of the other combat encounter types can either, which is why they are so rare.
