also note that you can get, IIRC, only one living ship per system... or is that limited to the living frigates? i'm not sure but i do know it is a limitation on the living frigates...
If you have not gotten a living ship through whalesong in that system yet, then just keep pulsing until whalesong shows as the anomoly. do not stop for anything else.
Could take 5 minutes, could take 60 minutes, thats the systems rng part.
If you already got a whalesong in that system from the first ship you got, find another system and start again.
Just note, it has been reported, that using your first living ship as the ship you pulse with to discover your second whalesong will up your chances of getting a faster pop. I cant verify this, I'm much too lazy to watch the clock like that.
Okay, SkiRich just gave you the answer for a Living Frigate. OP mentioned the void egg, so he wants the Living Ship like the kind you get from the Starbirth mission in game. This is different than the process for a Living Frigate.
I would suggest that OP work his way through the steps in This Post.
Or if that's confusing, try This other post.
You might be bugged somewhere, and if that's the case then look for the bug reporting forum on the right hand side of the forums list and submit a Zendesk Ticket from the Stickied Topic link.
You should not pulse in a system where you got your first ship.. best is that you warp into a yelllow system..Pulse for 20 seconds to 2 mins...the mother ship will constantly appear as the first encounter.
I can confirm that it is just simple as Musashi wrote - I got to another galaxy ( just to be shure ), warp to a random system ( even just to be shure ), call in the anomaly tro get a "fresh" egg ( you know - just to be shure .... sile ), and start pulsing. Shortly after the livig ship // "mother ship" ? get onto screen with the starbirth logo, I answered the communicator and it asked if I got another egg ... I got new coordinates, get to them and could take the ship for 10k nanites.
So if you a kind of this steps but nothing happens there must be another reason for that.

I like raising living ships myself, but never really felt the need to do it more than once per save file. They do have some limitations to their variety and one doesn't really out-perform another, so yeah, just never did it.
I have never bought an egg in the anomaly. I received some as gifts from other players on the anomaly. I don't often use live ships but well equipped they perform very well.
