Is there a way to roll back game versions on steam?
Title. Want to go back to an older update for this game that ran smoother for me and didn't break mods and etc.

Yes, and there are a number of guides on the subject. Just know that you lose discovery service (that I'm aware), and thus multiplayer, the ability to upload discoveries, and the expedition, while you're on a past version.

I've been told you can still do multiplayer with an older version, you just can only see and interact with other players on the same older version.

Edit, sheez, totally forgot to paste the main reason I even replied. Here is a video that explains how to do roll back to an older version:

Ah, I didn't think there would be such a drawback. The multiplayer part, I expected. But not the discovery service.

Thank you both for the info.

Additionally I came across another guide someone PM'd me not long after I made the thread. Here it is:

And I would suggest to have regular backups of your savefiles as switching savefiles between different versions of NMS my break them ;-) Esp. if you switch force and back a few time.

You can still push the upload button and get nanites, btw. It just may not actually record your discoveries. The same as playing offline completely.

That's a good reminder. Since I like what I'm doing on my current savefile, I think I'll back it up and save it for when I choose to update it again, but start a new game on the older version. Thanks!

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess there's no rush to record the discoveries since it should always be there to do at a later time, right?

That depends on how much you discovery. There's a limit to how much your save keeps track. At that limit, new discoveries replace older ones entirely, leaving you with no record of it at all.

Hmm, no chance those old discoveries will at least be viewable and recoverable for later uploading through the game's save editor?

Not really important for me to upload my discoveries, but it is nice to have.

No Chance at all. They literally are removed from the record in your save file to make room for new ones. The entire Save File is structured as arrays with a set number of records within each type of thing tracked. You cannot exceed that set number.

That's the reason there is a piece count limit for building, and a limit to how many total bases you can build as well. It's also the reason there's never been a mod that increases how many ships or multi-tools you can have (at one time), etc. The save file can only track that specific number of each. The limits can only be raised by HG (by recoding the saving and loading process to do so).

I see. No problem then, just wanted to be sure.

Have not tried a reverted version, but the older ones had a lot more planets in a system with very different scannable stuff on planet. I still have a discovery listing for a system I found about seven years ago. It still lists all the planets (and what I named them) but only six remain of the original nine. I also have first discovery rights for a lot of critters that no longer exist in the game.

So...my guess would be you might be able to figure a way to upload your discoveries, but the result would be kind of anti-climatic. And there is a possibility that some other interloper has discovered the system/existing planets in the current game and uploaded them before you.

That is a good point Mr. Bufferlow. In that case, Hakuna Matata!

Most mods work fine right now. I'm using almost 40 mods and game runs perfectly.
