How to clearly recognize a Experimental multitool
a) Is there a way to clearly distinguish Experimental multitools from 'normal' pistols or rifles?

I have a bunch of multitools where I'm not sure what type these are.

b) Additional question: Can you only find C-class Royal multitools and have then to upgrade the class?

Experimental MTs are styled just like the beginner MT. They are sleek, clean, simple and only come in 3 basic shapes. They're kinda round a bubbly.

This is the smaller pistol version, just like the beginner one.

There's also a fatter slightly larger pistol version, and a rifle version.

When you "Compare" your current multitool with a new one for sale in the cabinet, you'll see a description which says whether it's a pistol, rifle, experimental, or whatever.

And no, they're not just C class. You can get everything including S class, but they're much rarer.

There are a lot of regular pistols that look almost exactly like experimental ones.

Are you sure that top one is actually experimental, @JJ SilverWhite?

I've got two regular pistols at the moment with nearly that same appearance. I know it's a pistol and not an experimental because of what the bonus values are. Here's a picture of one.

The experimental pistols that are similar have a more bulbous look, that's the only way I can tell the difference and it's really not super-obvious (to me at least)

You can find them higher than C, but good luck with that. It's super rare, in my experience.

No I'm not really sure the little pistol is classed experimental. And in the save editor, the beginner gun shows as 'rifle' for some reason.

I just assumed it was because the style is extremely similar to the 2nd one I posted.

You don't look at the "type" in the save editor. You look at the bonus values (called "base stats' in the editor). If it's experimental (and S Class) it will have a scanning bonus of 100. It's that simple to check if it is experimental.

The same principle applies to checking the type for any multi-tool, but for the rest you need to know the actual range of possible bonus values. Experimental S-class is just easy to remember (100 for scanning).

The type field isn't really used for multi-tools other than royal vs. regular. That's related to weapon skin, not stats.

if you interact with a cabinet to check out an MT it actual says if it's an experimental

For goatfungus yeah there's only two MTs listed. For nomnom there are multiple MT types listed. You can keep the same seed (sometimes) and switch the type and it changes your gun.

I was looking for that comparison image! I've seen it, somewhere, before. I wanted a side-by-side comparison image that does a nice job of showing how the one regular pistol and experimental pistol vary slightly.
Nice job having it available and sharing it.

Thanks to everybody. For me it's hard to distinguish from the pictures (except the Aliens).
But for the first time I now installed the save editor, just to see what the base stats are. So from the base stats I found out that I have one Experimental, two Aliens and 3 rifles.

I installed the Save editor originally for the SAME reason. I still buy MT's that end up being 'just pistols' that I thought were experimental all the time, but at least now I know when I do it. haha
The Experimental's claim to fame is the scanning distance. They are as already described...usually very simple design. Here is an OLD photo of one I had years ago.

There are jeweled models that are awesome. The jewels glow when fired.
