"Hack a Sentinel Pillar" Never Ends
Just that. Six waves immediately followed by six waves again. And on and on. Whether the nodes are destroyed or not, I'm locked out of the pillar and can't hack it. Trying to do this on multiplayer and this is the result.

Might try turning off MP for a start. Are you doing a mission? There is one where you have to collect a specific item from one of the sentinels to stop the madness. So basically pick up everything.

I am guessing you have reloaded your save in case it was just a glitch.

He may be doing the Nexus mission that requires that you "Hack a Sentinel pillar". His description of having to fight waves of sentinels at the pillar before being able to hack it is pretty much what that mission is. In which case a save/reload is not an option, seeing as saving and reloading cancels any in-progress Nexus mission.

He could be doing the Traces of Metal quest though, which has a step with a similar setup. Then it is good advice.

I'm playing with a friend, so turning off multiplayer defeats the purpose of our excursions. I'm trying to get him into the game, but we keep running into problems like this. I thought doing a simple nexus mission together might be a good diversion from the other bugs we've been encountering in NMS, and then this happens.

As described by others, this nexus mission has waves of sentinels by design. Try a different type of nexus mission, like eliminate fauna or rescue a pilot. They typically have dangers (like an aggressive planet), but not to the same extreme.

This mission, as I see it, requires a specific Follow Steps to Complete... First Knock out the 3 Units Around the Pillar, Then go for the Sentinels... (Notices in the Lower Right, says Knock Out The Three Nodes..)

I think it works similar to Hazard Flora Mission. If you do not Visit The Grave Marker, you could kill Flora for Ever, but the mission does not count them till you do Step One...

@rdouglass1, I also find that if I have my Mech AI help, some of his kills don't count. Have you experienced the same?
I've had occasional issues with this mission similar to what the OP is describing, until I stopped using my Mech to help and I always knock out the 3 nodes right away.

My guess is that because there are two players, that Nexus mission gets fubar... as it can't handle that it should spawn in TWO Walkers (that's what happens in co-op, twice the fun, twice the Walker brains!) so the waves get reset or something.

My only issue with this mission is sometimes one straggler sentinel gets stuck inside the column geometry and takes awhile to kill.

OP: Make sure both of you are not playing "Ez-Pz" difficulty settings as that can cause issues with this mission too.

No, I have not used him for this. Some time in the past, I did have him for Kill Bugs at abandoned buildings, and they did count his kills there...

My buddy was playing on an easy setting; he got tired of dying so often. Man, this game needs to update their multiplayer like they just did for VR. All these bugs have turned him off playing.

Yah, they count for the bug kills for me as well, it's just the hack a sentinel pillar mission that glitches that way for me. I honestly don't know if it's the Mech AI tht was causing the kills not to count, or just some other variable, but I've had better luck not using the Mech.

I had the almost exact opposite experience just last night. Crossed into a new galaxy, made a few jumps to find a system that was undiscovered and interesting to me. Picked a planet, and landed... right next to one of these.

Ok, no biggie, walked up the console, logged in, turned it off, read the logs, took the multitool... never had to blow up the power nodes, never had to fight a single thing, except the urge to laugh at the sentinels for leaving this one wide open and unguarded.

@Indigo, you never have to fight the things or blow up the nodes if you are not on the Nexus mission (or the Traces of Metal mission with the same requirements). Even on an aggressive sentinel planet, you can just run up to the terminal and deactivate the sentinels.

As for killing bugs at abandoned buildings... that's my 3rd favorite thing to do, and I will actively seek them out just to kill all the bugs there. Just need my trusty Blaze Javelin and Plasma Launcher.

Pop an egg with a Javelin blast, nuke the bugs with plasma grenades, rinse and repeat until none remain. I don't even bother collecting larval cores, I just like squishing bugs.

I had that happen a couple days ago. Come to find out there was a sentinel that somehow got warped or stuffed inside the pillar so couldn't be killed, ergo mission couldn't finish. Annoying af. The nexus mission does not work like usual. You cannot run up and deactivate the sentinels, as the object of that mission is to kill them, think it was called Hacking the Pillar.

Never run nexus missions in MP.

Try a geology cannon on the pillar in the spot where the cowardly sentinel is hiding. I would say a plasma grenade, but those have a nasty habit of bouncing back to kill the traveler.
