Finally got a HOTAS to work in 2023, what ended up finally working (For VR but works for regular too)
I spent *hours* figuring this out, it became a quest.

I got no help from forums.

Most posts on this were outdated.

Some failures were probably my hardware, or some other factor so it worked for them but not me.

First I tried using a guide I found on youtube, but steam refused to find my logitech 3d pro extreme natively.

So I used x360ce, which kinda worked. The problem was while steam I saw as a controller, VR didn't. Worse steam's controller rebinding is pretty bad, and has been buggy for years, with it failing to save often. I finally found a old post someone made showing a config file I had to edit to even get it to save again. It also didn't allow for Z rotation and had other limitations.

So then I found this video...

and then I needed to use this video.

But I finally, after much tweeking in this got it to work.

Its not perfect because it can't be without proper support but its very workable and usable in VR.

So libraries had to be installed, I learned a crapload about controllers, and I wanted to slap whoever at hello games decided to stop supporting mouse and keyboard in VR, but its there.

A note, do NOT use a logitech 3d stick, the throttle is too basic. You need a throttle with a *real* "off zone". I had a old thrustmaster hotas X which solved this.

Note you will spend a lot of time tweeking the settings and then binding the buttons for things like your scanner, pulse drive, etc.

Oh and the galaxy map, which is bad in 2d is *awful* in 3d. Its literally worth going 2D, warping and going back to VR. It will save you time for anything but basic "sure lets check that out" jumps.

I'm less a HOTASphile and more a Controllerphobe. I'm that age that grew up just prior to controllers and went from the Atari to PC, never got into console games and using a controller feels like using a frying pan as a hammer. It works but its very clumsy.
