Is it even possible to scan the giant sandworm?
I know it doesn't count towards fauna scans. Technically there is no reason to scan him, however I want to just because if it is possible. I had the beast right in front of and scanned but nothing happens.

Am I wasting my time and should I do something reasonable instead?

The whole red dot thing seems to be an HG inside joke on players. Back in the early days of the game, the sentinel dogs would ping a red dot to get you excited while searching for critters.

It served no purpose other then to be annoying when you figured out it was not that last unfound critter.

They took the red dot away from the dogs during one of the updates. A few update laters, they introduced the giant worms, and while not quite as hard to mistake for a final critter, they are bait to frustrate new players thinking that there must be a way to scan them.
It's because the worm's brain is so tiny ... : )

It's just a poor lost traveller, removed from it's home planet, where it could get high and fart spice gas. Or, perhaps it's just an illusion, brought on by too much Nip-Nip, and therefore unscannable. (if that's even a word).

Already answered as NO you cannot scan the gigantic worms....

HOWEVER
The second HG adds grappling hooks into the game... we had better be able to do this!

The worm though can take you quite a distance away if you are unfortunate on the spot where it comes out of the ground. One second I was standing beside my ship, the second in the middle of nowhere on the final meeting planet (5) in the expedition.

They were scannable when they first arrived. They could also kill you. Better as it is now i think.

I must've started playing after this change. It would be more interesting if these things were something to be feared. As it is now, I just ignore them.

In the NMS version prior to Companions .. yes ... if you thing the high flying birds were/are hard the worms were harder.
Think that is why they got rid of them in the nanite claim thingy.

I would definitely laugh the first time I saw one eat my ship in the distance. The first time. =)

I wish they'd make them scanable, but as a bonus critter.

I scanned one before, about a week ago. Not sure if that was intentional or a glitch now, since so many people have answered no.
