Defective Spacesuit
While doing repairs on one of my frigates, I managed to cast myself adrift, well not really since I was falling. No problem I figured I'll just jet back to the original frigate or failing that, I'll just zoom over to another frigate. Yeah, well no. The suit started bleeding air, the suit temperature dropped and simultaneously my shield rapidly started failing.
All this happened so rapidly, I was unable to repair the failing systems fast enough.
SO I DIED!

Now I'm not a noob, so I've died before when falling through the floor of a ship. But I don't recall having suit system failures before dying. Have things changed or is my memory faulty.

What really annoyed me, is that a Spacesuit is supposed to protect you in SPACE! It seems to do a good job while clambering around and repairing one of your damaged frigates or looting a wrecked freighter in space. Which raises the question why does it fails so badly when untethered in space?

Curse them micro meteorites!

Yeah well, the thing is the suit systems started to fail before the shield cut off. So I think this kind of rules out radiation as the culprit as well.

The frigates are not "space" and no, the suite won't protect you from the vacuum.

I've explored airless planets, and all though there is a noticeable loss of air, it's not extreme.

Jokes aside, death by suit failure is normal if not by aggro or sentinel. Tip: Don't fall into space.

It's not a space suit. It's an Exosuit. Basically an advanced environmental suit. That's why they can range from full body suit (looks kinda like a space suit) to just various specialized chest plates, clothing, and powered armor, etc.
Your suit can protect you from hazards, (cold, heat, radiation, etc.) even provide extra oxygen for extended time under water. But, even then it has it's limits that you can extend with upgrades - but not indefinitely.

What Mandrake said so well is your answer. Not a Space Suit. Launching yourself into space is usually a death sentence, and a short one. Some folks mess about with it and survive but they know the exact conditions to look for. The rest of us, we just die and get a pithy quote from Sean.

Interesting that you assume that a suit that does not stop cold, heat, radiation, or toxic gases would be okay for space. It doesn't even do great on pleasant worlds. The game never sez it is a SPACE suit.

Sure that's what it's called, but really as an environmental protection suit worn in space does it not make sense for it to protect you from vacuum?
I personally would love to be able to zoom around in space. I think HG has fallen short here.
No I'm not knocking HG, I love the game and have well over 3k hours in it.
Just an FYI, cause I was interested if this still worked, and in expeditions right now, it works.

You can summon your freighter from a planet. You are able to jump or fall from your freighter and still land alive and well on the planet. I just did it again.

Tips:
- Make sure everything is full ( health, hazards, shield and jetpack fuel )
- Pick a spot near the edge where you won't hit anything on the way down. You might need to jump down to a few platforms, but make sure everything is still filled. You will start to get the warning about your oxygen. Use x key to fill it until you enter into the planets atmosphere. Don't use your jetpack fuel till the last min to land safely.

Hey, even the suits the astronauts wear on evas lose air and offer only limited protection from radiation. Yet they are still labeled spacesuits!

Well ours aren't. What part of the definition of exosuit are there problems with? No matter how hard I squint my tiny little eyes I can't make out the word "Space" anywhere there. lol
Travel safe...

This is why NMS is more of a "fantasy" game and not a highly "realistic" game.

No, it doesn't make sense because you wear it on planets, not in space. It makes sense that it does its darndest to try and keep you alive in a situation it was never designed for - so since the extreme vacuum of the complete void of space, you can actually still cram it full of oxygen every few seconds as it strains to keep from imploding on you, keep the life support charged and it will actually hold it together and keep you alive, even under those extremes.
Run out of oxygen to charge it with, or panic and don't recharge it fast enough... then '-kzzt-' you died. :)

That is true! I still like my NMS space with gravity that is not linked to mass and where space is generally an insta-death situation if you fall from a freighter or frigate. I have done the sky diving once but you need to be really close to a planet or have a mountain of protection mats.
