Autosave vs. Restore point -- now you get both when entering and exiting ships?
I just noticed that the game is making an autosave when I enter my starship... and then makes a restore point when I exit my ship. I don't know how long this has been true... I'm just noticing it for the first time with this current expedition.

I am guessing this new autosave is why my game is crashing when I enter my ship every 5th or 6th time I do it. And no... I haven't Zen-desked. The f-ing homework they require you to do and the lack of follow up leads me to say "screw it, I'm not paid to spend my Sunday trouble shooting their game."

Has this autosave on entering a ship new? Seems semi pointless to autosave on entry and then again on exit. I guess it's meant to disable save scumming? Is there a reason why that was a problem?

I've never noticed a save on entering a ship, only when you exit. They did change the way the game saves a few updates ago when they added auto save. Save beacons, save points and save terminals found at certain buildings make a restore point just like they always did that would allow you to roll back your game to a previous time. Exiting your ship now overwrites that so no more roll backs, unless you never use your ship! In fact, the only way to make a restore point now is to backup your save files. Throw in auto save that seems to happen randomly and the entire save system has been a mess ever since.

Yes this is a brand new saving convention which started with the last big update, Fractals I believe. (Or maybe the Interceptor update at the beginning of April 2023).

Basically there is only one manual save now. There used to be two. The new manual save is activated by, as usual, save points, but now additionally by getting out of your ship. Getting out of your ship was an auto save previously which essentially was like a second manual save, but it was called auto save to distinguish it from the manual save.

Now the autosave is truly automatic....you have zero control over it. It seems to occur by time, every few minutes.

Presumably they changed the save system to appease stoned or lazy players who may play for a few hours without ever getting in or out of their ship or activating a manual save point. Then if their power goes out or they quit without saving for some reason, they won't complain to HG that they lost many hours of gameplay because they didn't know they had to do something to save the game.

I seriously don't like it. I miss the time when I could create a save that was only overwritten if I chose to do it myself. A true manual save. I don't understand the thinking that eliminated that system.

Reduces / makes more difficult scum saving.

I don't think this is the reason. Why do people save scum? To dupe items. Why take away one way to dupe and leave the refinery dupe? Doesn't make sense. I think it's more along the lines of management told them to add auto save so the hacked it into the current save mechanics.

More about catering to console players or other noobs who are too ADHD to remember to manually save things when they need to. The fact that you can still just as easily "scum save" means it's not a reason. It's just a different procedure.
