As a player who spent a lot of time doing this I'm the biggest advocate for at least rudimentary level of automation. Hell, even QoL improvements of the crafting menu will change it for the better, but...
NMS didn't get any new items you can craft for years now (mission- or expedition-exclusive items don't count). Stasis device and Fusion Ignitor are the dead end of the crafting tree and HG is not know for going back to old stuff and mechanics to give them refreshment/rework/expansion. They do what they have to do to keep game sales going and I don't think that NMS target player base are very interested in chaining multiple refiners into one long production line or something like that. Automation requires substantial redesign of already implemented mechanics which will definitely result in multiple bugs they would need to fix. This is far more time- and money-consuming endeavor than add new companion or new race with set of cosmetics. But I digress, so I should stop here.
If you get a freighter and install the matter beam, you will be able to use anything in your inventories anywhere in the system (if you freighter is also in system). You can craft without having to pull anything together.
To a great extent, you reach a point where it makes more sense to buy what you need rather than harvest or mine it on a planet. Using frigate missions, and a farm, there are only a few items that are kind of hard to find.
You can build some refiners that store mats on planets, but it is really only an option. I never use them and still spend more time avoiding hitting the max credit line than worrying about not having enough of everything.
You will find that most activities in NMS are options - not required. If you are enjoying the particular process, motor on. If not, do it a different way.
Never gonna happen though, they took years just to fix bugged refiners :(
Satisfactory *is* an automation game with sci-fi theme, it's all about building automated production lines and conveyor belts to build stuff. It's a completely different game from NMS, besides being on an alien planet and setting up machinery to dig out raw materials these two have nothing in common really.
It's a fun game though. Scratches that weird itch for many players.
The automation in NMS is limited to : Build automatic extractor on resource spot. Attach automatic storage depots to the extractor.
That's it.
The storage depots are their own thing and cannot be connected to regular inventories (you can only manually collect output from them).
There is no automation for refiners. You can only manually recharge them or collect the output. they work when you're away or alt tabing, but have seemingly unfixable duplication/item suppression bugs after reloading.
The only way that automation would actually add something would be if you could connect the output of machines to the input of other machines, And, since you can't gather all basic materials on one planet, a way to transfer materials between bases. Sort of like what Starfield has.
However, outside of the satisfaction of building it, it wouldn't be particularly useful, since money isn't scarce in the game. With Starfield you can automate all but the last step, so when manually doing the last step you get more experience for leveling than you would making a low-level product, but that's not a thing in No Man's Sky.
Satisfaction of building it isn't nothing, so I wouldn't be mad if it were added, but it's a lot more complicated than just making a refiner-like machine, for not a whole lot of utility, so I don't consider it a very high priority.
Yes you can automate bases to collect resources. Return to collect resources from the depots when the depots are full.
Major gases can be gathered automatically and collected from gas depots.
Antimatter production can be automated.
The exosuit can have a personal refiner that automates refining resources.
Plants can be farmed and their harvest picked all in one, using the overhead collector, in the bio-domes.
Plants all regrow over time to be harvested again.
Milk production from creatures can be collected from the automatic farming unit.
There are auto units to place and use at element hotspots.
Any base by another player that has resourcess available can be used by other players.
Farmed plants can also be harvested repeatedly on a personal freighter.
There is also a limited resource gathering device that can be installed on a freighter to collect rare metals etc. The antimatter device can be built on a freighter too.
Component blue prints can be purchased or found in game and and it can take seconds or less to craft almost anything from basic resources, you carry in your suit or ship)(s). Huge storage containers can contain all the resources you ever need in the game and can be accessed over large distances.
For anyone who hasnt tried it, Satisfsactory has one of the mot beautiful maps and is a really fun game just for exploration. NMS fans may appreciate it for JUST the map. Not even getting into the game's fun mechanics.
And no one has made the modification!
