Yes it is, but you can disable it if you don't like PVP, so its the best of the best, the ones that likes PVP can fight anyone that likes PVP, and for people like me that hates PVP, I disabled it because people would do like in most PVP games, camp and kill over and over, destroy the bases and such, thankfully we can protect it and prevent any damages from anyone, can block looting and such too.
The game was released as a single player game. Multiplayer was added as an after thought 2 years after release. The PVP angles of the game are poor you can't hunt newbs and gank them because PVP can be disabled with a button click by your target (as can the multi-player function of the game). You can't loot their gear and duping is easy. You can have all the best stuff for PVP in a few minutes with the save editor, there are no checks and balances, or bans for hacking cheating and mutual destruction only takes a fraction of a second. Plus its easy to make a back up copy of your character even for permadeath.

You can use the game for PVP but its no EVE Online or Fortnite if that's what you are looking for.

Right. To sum it up, it's not a competitive player vs player game by design, but it does have PvP mechanics present if you really want it.

In other words, it's not a multiplayer PvP game, it just has multiplayer PvP in it.

Nope, single player experience with MP tacked on late, and PVP in such a way that your opponent can turn off PvP damage and still kill you if you keep it on.

If you want NMS for PvP, you don't want NMS.

Nope. If you happen upon another player's base and you raid it the storage containers display your own inventory. If you take it you can just grabbing your own stuff.

If they have picakbles or a mining set up its a separate instance and you get resources without affecting them at all. In some Expeditions some players set up mining bases so other players can get resources to speed up the group tasks.

The real competitive PVP is in player made, community driven tournaments with approved load outs and standardized settings. They're created and hosted by people in discord servers like The Galactic Hub and Ultimate Feud Company, among others. Since you can build almost anything in this game, we have a wide variety of different arenas and maps to play in and there seem to be more everyday. The movement that's possible in this game is amazing compared to others. With the new autophage mods, the pvp standard at the top level is 5 fully charged max damage blaze shots against fully maxed out shields to kill. Neutron Cannons are banned in pretty much every regulated competition unless stated otherwise since they tend to make matches short and boring, and don't require much skill to use with the splash damage effect.

How do you prevent players from using the Save Editor to create overpowered weapons and shields?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

We keep standards for tournaments and know how many shots it takes to get a kill against max shields on both standard and challenging enemy damage. If someone has a tool that deviates from those standards it is very obvious. Some tournaments require equipment checks before any fighting begins.

I am honestly curious, as to what made you think this game is like Rust?

No, it isn't.

Same, also curious. This game is very much single player with big focus on exploration. The only times you will find players, is during expeditions or if you do a co-op mission at The Anomaly.

I guess you can also find players if you google and seek out the player cities.
