A word of advice for intrepid travellers about difficulty settings
I play only permadeath. In any game, if it has it. So having a tough challenge is not a problem, rather an encouragement for me, but I think it's a good idea to warn those that would maybe consider going crazy with the difficulty settings like I did:
since the change introduced to difficulty settings (don't know exactly in which update it was introduced) I decided to play on custom permadeath (i.e. all difficulty maxed out).
I find this can be possibly a bit too harsh in NMS, especially at the beginning.
There are imho three settings that you should really be aware of, ESPECIALLY if playing permadeath!

1) Purchases: Expensive
This option should be called: "make everything obscenely, ridiculously expensive"

2) Goods availability: Scarce
Yeah, forget about those sweet items that you're used to from regular playthroughs

3) Enemy strength: Challenging
Makes sentinel ships basically immortal when you begin your playthrough with a low level ship. Lots of fun in permadeath :steamfacepalm:

4) Last but not least, Locking difficulty settings
If you select all three of the above cause you're a masochist like me, think really hard before you make this decision.

Hope this will be helpful

Your knobs, your problem.

If your ears hurt, don't turn the volume up to 11 superman.

Even playing in normal mode taking on Sentinels too early is bad news. Fallback is to make space and summon the Anomaly (if you get caught buy never ending sentinels or can't run away) and that doesn't work until you've made that first jump.

My usual deaths in Permadeath were from plants of all things ;)

Goes in to settings, picks the hardest ones, comes on to forum to complain. Ok, cool. Those settings are for the people who came on the forums and complained about how easy it was, always and forever complaining. Some still complain. Now they come in and complain that the settings are hard. Well... ok. And then they lock them, and then they complain because they locked them. :steamfacepalm:

I wasn't complaining.
Although the beginning was extremely hard I enjoy my game mode as it is thoroughly, especially now that my character/ship are nearly maxed out. I just thought I'd give a warning to those that might try that as well.
Thanks for constructive input.

Just IMHO, if someone needs to be warned about these settings, there is a good chance that they are not ready for PD in the first place.

i'm confused...
OP you decided to do extreme, and enjoyed it
then you want to warn others who might want to do the same,. why?
why spoil the 'adventure' for others that you yourself had, by pre-warning them?

Hmm... you have a point. Still, my intentions were good.

To be honest the first time I tried these new settings I was quite surprised myself by how much more difficult the game gets, especially with the expensive purchases. So I don't know, permadeath is one thing, full-on masochistic permadeath with locked settings is... different :steammocking:

Good point. I haven't been back to my PD save since these difficulty sliders were introduced.

This is just a geeky computer game. You want to become a legend then join the army or take up a sport.

Back in my days as a contractor I worked in the home of a retired SEAL. Should I say more?
