Finding a S class staff

I don't understand how to find/make a S class staff. Can some one explain how to?

My first thought would be to check to see if you can upgrade it at the tool merchant (machine). That would be the obvious method. Isn't it treated like a tool in all other ways?

Each terminal seems to give a different rank for your staff when making it. Just put the parts together, see if it's a rank you're alright with and then either build it or leave for another terminal.

Since the color is randomized based on whatever terminal you're at and which head you're using at the time, I'd personally just take whichever one looks best. Otherwise you're going to be at it for a while trying to find the rank AND color-combinations you want.

Juggling the bits and pieces I had, I got mostly C class, 2 B class and 1 A. That was the best I could do with the pile of pieces I had at that terminal. I had plenty of nanites so I settled for the A class and upgraded to S at a station. (That part works normally). I had plenty of modules from the tool I'd sacrificed to make room for the staff and fully upgraded it's O.K.

I renamed mine to "Ugly stick" and if anything griefs me in game it gets hit with my ugly stick. (The name fits BTW)

Upgraded to S-class it seems comparable to other S-class tools, there is a comment during the quest to the effect that with the staff in hand some things will open that wouldn't otherwise. Unsure if that's related to the quest or a property of the staves which other MT's don't have.

Hmm, have you tried the things that you need an atlas pass for?

Never really thought about it, I tend to just make one and then slosh some nanites into it. Don't know what the practical difference is between a staff and any other multitool. I like the aesthetics of it, though. And there is this funny glitch where a mining or terrain manipulator beam keeps showing. I am easily amused.
