Since the color is randomized based on whatever terminal you're at and which head you're using at the time, I'd personally just take whichever one looks best. Otherwise you're going to be at it for a while trying to find the rank AND color-combinations you want.
I renamed mine to "Ugly stick" and if anything griefs me in game it gets hit with my ugly stick. (The name fits BTW)
Upgraded to S-class it seems comparable to other S-class tools, there is a comment during the quest to the effect that with the staff in hand some things will open that wouldn't otherwise. Unsure if that's related to the quest or a property of the staves which other MT's don't have.
Hmm, have you tried the things that you need an atlas pass for?
