So, how does Hello Games make money from this game?
Like i get it the game launched underdeveloped and let's say they wanted to bring the players all the promised stuff. But it's been long since they pretty much did that.

So , how does the devs make money from this game other than selling copies? I don't see any DLC that's meant to support the devs like DRG.

Sean answered this question in one of the earlier interviews around 1.2 or 1.3, they sell more copies of the game each time they do an update than most companies their size make from new releases. Just take a look at the top selling games on steam for the week following one of their updates.

IIRC they also setup a foundation to help support indie developers too, although i didn't pay much attention to that.

Essentially what HG have done is the live service model, except instead of battle passes on a free game, they sell copies of the base game.

It's a fairly small company, fewer than 30 people as of couple of years ago, so the money they're making from sales seem to be sufficient for them. They're apparently profitable enough and financially stable. They don't seem to be profit driven like large game studios these days.

DLC doesn't support dev's. It supports greedy corporate entities ;)

All that DLC being common means is that most gaming companies are greedy corporate entities.
I wouldn't be too concerned about future viability. Their latest accounts (to Oct 2021) show over £100 million in assets with an operating profit of close to £20 million for that year.

So unless they spent 2022 and 2023 buying up small countries it is safe to say that there is plenty of cash around to fund development for years to come. I don't think paid DLC is something they are even contemplating.

if only every company could be like these, the way almost all companies started like this way back. imagine the games we could be playing.

They expand to new systems. Xbox One in July 2018, PS 5 and next gen Xbox in November 2020, Nintendo Switch in October 2022, and macOS in June 2023.

This.

They made a giant pile of money at launch and each update drives additional sales. Plus ports to new platforms. Big part of that £20 million was from the Switch port.

Who cares? I bought it, I play it, I sleep easy.

It's the stock market that ruins everything. Once companies get listed on the stock exchange they change into moneymaking properties and everything else: customers, employees, innovation, etc. becomes secondary. Privately owned companies make less money but they retain creative freedom and can pick their own direction, no loudmouth investor will be telling them how to do their job.

I believe more games should be like this, the thing that increases sales and entices new people to buy the game and current users to even buy it on multiple platforms is the fact that they can expect constant support and improvement for the foreseeable future and even when those improvements stop coming through they can at least enjoy a content rich complete gaming experience for a single price.

they pull in about 3 million a year in new game sales from what i read

The very first thing they promised was the Superformula with infinite variation (and the very thing many of us bought this game for). And that still hasn't been anywhere in sight yet.

True that's really the only problem, everything looks the same now. At the start they at least have a bit of randomness

Well sort of and sort of not... Companies list to go public mostly to get rich fast or keep a company on the verge from going under.. So much greed is involved in that process.

Also, some elder advice, companies are constructs of people, people and many people are greedy. People own private companies and public companies... SO...

I'm sure this game is just a showcase for their engine.

Problem is that, let said this company don't had boss of stockholder/shareholder to answer, and not had to share profit with them as well, so they are independent, so meaning few small people can alive with couple million dollar for few year, but now if companies had stockholder/shareholder, that is whole other story, it's will be cost lot because more pay to more people labor or owner/loaner, time limited, less gameplay, they break off within game to sell small part of game to make more profit to paid all for stockholder/shareholder, while worker's wage fixed, not % making money from sale, think of master and slave, slave is one who doing work, and not get much at all, while master get lot but not work lot.

That's what I think, unless I'm mistaken.
