crystal sulfide.. pin to locate.. ok, how exactly?
try to craft something that requires crystal sulfide.. get this pop up saying it cant be crafted, pin to locate.. but there is no way to "pin it"
so... that's useless..

I know I just need to find a planet with water, and they are easy to find.. but seriously... why have the game give you directions that are impossible to follow?

Almost certainly a programming oversight. Checking the usual way, and selecting crystal sulphide won't get you to a pin.

If you have an item that needs crystal sulphide (exocraft items/underwater base components), try to pin those and see if it'll do something. I'll see if I can pull something on my end, but it's worth a try on your end as well.

ETA: I chose a bad one for this attempt... an item for an exocraft I don't have yet, lol. That'll make it awkward. Will keep trying.

Aye, that is a good idea, I'll see if that works

To pin a material harvested from the world, you can go to the crafting tree for something that needs it, and hover over the material to get that card, from which you can hit X to pin. For your crystal sulfide example, I started to craft the construct part from the expedition that needs it by clicking an open inventory slot, then went to the crafting tree with E, then hovered over the crystal sulfide ingredient and hit X, which successfully pinned it as a secondary mission in my log. I was on my freighter, so the directions started with the basic "find a water world".

All the controls are for the PC, so controller or VR might be different. The save I used was a former expedition save that had converted to normal after finishing, but I don't think that would affect anything. If it works the same as finding Radiant Shards and Inverted Mirrors did when I actually used the "repair a crashed interceptor" mission, it will give you a direction scanner in your analysis visor the same way the dreaded "approximate location" thing works, and then when you are close enough (1000u or so) it will give you the exact distance. Once you get that, you should be able to switch to the normal scanner mode, find the icon, and tag it to get an easy-to-follow marker.

Also having this problem. The tree view will let me pin everything else, but not the crystals and all I can find in water are the darn clams I don't need.

Find a water world. It's available in most largish bodies of water.

I should mention I spent several hours looking for a water world. There are apparently none around me. Which, again, is why being unable to pin the thing it tells you to pin is annoying. If you could pin it, it would locate the nearest suitable world for you, too.

The starter planet on the Expedition is a water world.

:steamthis:
no need to pin it (which btw you can do in the catalog), it is a commonly found product as stated above found in any large-ish, deep-ish body of water (so large ponds, lakes etc.) will have them and the blue icon for them is easily seen by using your visor underwater
