You don't need a details charting at all. It serves no real purpose in the grand scheme of the game.
but yeah... even though there are up to 6 POIs recorded, there's no current way in-game to mark one of them so you can easily go back there for whatever reason...
I do sometimes wish there was an easy way to revisit a place I found. Like, if I find a crashed ship that I'd like to have but I'm not yet ready to claim it. (Yes, I know you can summon them later, but I don't want to claim a bunch of ships only to find ones I like later. I'd like to be able to "bookmark" the sites and then keep notes about which ships are where and then decide which ones I want to claim and which I want to scrap, etc.) I tried putting down the beacons that you can place when you're using the analysis visor, but it seems as if those disappear after a while?
But on the other hand, I realize that this isn't the way that, so I've seen, people typically play this game, nor do I think the game is really intended to be one where you spend many, many hours exploring a single planet. :) I'd also be concerned about file size and things like that if the game kept progressive maps of each planet I visit and start to explore. So on the whole, I'm OK with no maps, too.
It is correct that the original game made no provision for mapping or bookmarking a site (other then a colored save beacon or base computer). The idea was you should be moving on, but that was before we even had a base.
I have a feeling HG is avoiding pulling the curtain back so we would know the POIs are basically in a grid structure on each planet. I never use the planetary maps and always find what I need because after 4,000 hours I just have a feel for where they are going to plop the next one.
That is also probably why the ship scanner is less accurate than the suit scanner for POIs. If the ship scanner was too accurate, it would take a lot of the fun of seeking from of the game and probably also lead to figuring out the pattern of POIs on a planet.
It would ruin the experience if folks were able to identify the grid(s) in use and what planet type had what grid. It would make exploring pretty dull.
It is already pretty easy to sort out the primary types of POIs for a planet. I always enjoy when I find one early game that has a drop pod every 300 meters or so.
Game, of course, not intended for such play - internally. But for the user, it's all about exploration, making charts, trading coordinates and seek the things... only _you_ cannot see anything of it, surprisingly. I think, it's an omission. Weird one.
And I am not needed "detail charting" in terms of deposits, mountains, caves, etc. What I need is the info I supposed to have (and even trade!): mapped sectors and POI in them. "You are here, you can go there, and there are _these_ POI there too". I believe, even some Amiga could produce such chart, not talking about modern PC.
For example, I land at a point of interest and it is a settlement with an S class multitool, I will click on the way point in my discoveries, rename to "Found S class pistol here". Eventually I want to take a walk around and see if they stick.
In discovery, the waypoints that show up in the upper right (above minerals). You can rename them just like you can flora, fauna and minerals. You just have to rename them before uploading. So if you press the "Upload all" button, it will be too late to rename them (the same as any other things that can be renamed).
The hotkey (or button) that you need to press in order to rename is on the mouse over tooltip. You use that hotkey to rename.
Here's screenshots showing the process:

When you are at a location with the white pole to make a manual save, click it to save. Press escape and go to the discoveries tab, on the right will be the waypoints. Press x to rename and upload. It should rename the area as what ever you named it.
You are welcome, I went ahead and deleted my post it since it is fixed :)
