Can the giant flying worms actually hurt/kill you?
Because I've had them give me, the player, a jump scare by bursting out the ground right in front of me or landing practically on top of me, especially on infested planets where they're all over the place, but my avatar has never been damaged by one. So I'm just wondering.

(I'm not talking about the ones confined to titan worm burrows. I know those can do damage. Just the ones that fly about and burrow in and out of the ground in random places.)

No. Its as if we're on a different collision layer.

That's kind of what I thought, thanks!

So, basically, the only danger is that they might give me, the player, a heart attack, but my avatar will be fine. LOL

They do make for a good photo op, though. Well, at least some of them do.

Are you 100% sure on that? They can collide with the ship, I've been damaged by them that way.

Yeah, under exactly the right circumstances they can launch you high into the air.

Technically the worms don't kill you, it's the sudden stop at the end does that.

:steamthis: This is good fun, provided your shields are maxed out. I nearly made it all the way to space via 'worm slap' once. :steamhappy:

Its never happened to me, but I've never been right above the spot where they pop out. I've been on the re-entry spot and nothing happens physically.

Just be careful of the giant robots that shoot worms. :steamhappy:

Also the giant butterflies that attack ships.

I did a video of this once soon after the worms were introduced. I got some "your a liar comments" over it so I'm glad someone else has had the experience also.

I've also been struck by a worm while flying my ship low and it knocked me off course.

They can do that when you're on the ground? You must have to be in a very specific spot, then, because I've been very, very close a few times when they've burst out of the ground and nothing's happened to my intrepid avatar. No launching, no suit damage, nothing. I was rammed by biological horrors once, though, and that did some damage when I finally got back to the ground. LOL

Interesting that a worm collision can damage your ship, though. I've never had one near when I've been flying low over the ground. I don't do that as much as exploring on foot, though.

A good test would be to fly straight at a worm as it comes right at your ship. The issue I see is that the worms are usually going away from my position.

That's what I did. I was flying to a POI when the worm popped out to do its dolphin jumps, then the intrusive thoughts won. RAMMING SPEED!!! Nearly died (use gdamage increases all damage) from that hit, but was spun out just right to nose dive into a cave. Then I died.

So you can die, but you really have to work hard at it. :emberhappyred:

Yeah, when they were first introduced the universe got a bit stirred up and I had one appear under my base. Quite a shock to suddenly find yourself falling from a great height due to an entirely unexpected event like that. I did survive but it was close because I froze at the controls for a bit too long due to the shock.
