There is no need to chase the animal while it is in the feeding state, as it tends not to move very far.
If you don't want to hurt the animal, shoot the multitool in a safe direction when the "product" is released, which will reset the feeding status of the animals in the vicinity and you can feed them again immediately.
Myself, I just tracked down a planet with Faecium deposits to mine. Typically swampy or fungal planets. Hitting one deposit got me more than enough to finish the stage.
Found a group of animals, fed pellets to a bunch of them, a few seconds later they all start dropping it, then I farmed it like that for a bit and had plenty enough.
Maybe that's just your issue. Feed a bunch of animals, stay with them and do nothing, and that should work
At least you found a work-a-round though!
Stay safe out there Traveller
Isn't that a low carb drink/snack? WTF is it doing in No Man's Sky??
Edit: I always get a kick out of that...a planet with shi*t deposits.
