Poor.
Closest is derelict freighters, those can be tense if you pick the right one.
Pirate systems are fairly mellow once past noob, that can be enhanced, visit the guys at the station who hand out quests, take on around 20 of the kill pirates quests before doing the first and have at it.

However there is also a special device you collect in game, that lets you find and board derelict freighters. You can board those derelict freighters with friends and defeat the evil beasties lurking within. Each freighter is randomly built so the layout and interiors are very different, so you are always on your toes. Some are big and really big and are all procedural created.

There is no enemy crew to defeat but you can do PvP with other players if you organise it. Only on derelict freighters and not on the neutral ones(that can be boarded) or your own. That can be fun and on a big freighter interior with a couple of floors especially if you all make junk permadeath saves just for fun. Can be quite a challenge to be the last one to come out alive : D
You can board your own frigates and space walk between them for fun.

If you want to be a pirate there is plenty of fun with that especially in the special pirate systems. Perhaps even more fun with PvP on. But you can't steal other player loot only the pirates. You can only fight pirate star ships and not board them.

There is a huge amount of variation in weapons and ship performance which makes battles easy or hard, especially in PvP. Tech can be damaged but that is menu based and you have to repair and fix stuff but no fire breakouts. But you do sometimes get attacked by pirates from the air when you are on foot which can set things alight. Mostly though the game is not like a fully developed FPS shooter (thats a different game) as the worlds are so large it is something you have to organise between friends.
No man's Sky does a bit of everything really well but is not a 'death match' enemy crew kind of experience. Exploration of deep space interrupted by challenges on the journey is what it does brilliantly and for the majority of the time is a solo or four in group experience but you could potentially have up to 32 players all with PvP but it is a sandbox organise it yourself kind of thing. Expedition mode adds a loose short story event to complete which might require you to do certain challenges like boarding a derelict freighter to complete milestones.
it would be cool though if Hello Games did add crews you could battle or sneak past to reach a goal or collect something. The basics are there so perhaps one day boarding and crippling ships, saving a princess (or prince) from an evil alien will be a thing one day. Maybe even save the ship's cat with a sense of humour, which is probably more the No Man's Sky take on things. More FPS shooter looters need to do that :D
He didn't ask what you "can do that is almost, sorta, maybe just a little bit similar to boarding a ship you disabled if you really use your imagination a lot."
One if the things they discussed in the big reveal a few weeks ago is if you have the right skills you can disable an enemy ship, board it, kill the crew, and take the ship.
OPs question seems oddly specific.
Cool, now I'm even more excited for the release of Starfield.
But I also agree with you that the question does seem oddly specific given the timing.
THAT is probably why I missed the whole part about boarding mechanics. I have been oddly obsessed with the whole sandwich thing. There's no way I'd forget about that.
How do these work? I frequently come across them when use the Pulse Engine, but there's nothing to interact with.
there are destroyed freighters that you can't do anything with, and derelict freighters that have 4 landing pads on them. you probably just encounter the first kind.
Derelict freighters can be encountered in pulse drive but it's super rare, to find them easily use an emergency broadcast receiver
So; Landing pad = good, No landing pad = skip
The first is just a freighter wreck, with absolutely nothing you can do other than wave at it and go back to pulse.
The 2nd is the same as the first, except it has a few cargo pods, which you can shoot to get the contents. Pirates will usually also spawn in and attack you when you shoot.
The 3rd is the kind that has 4 landing pads and which you can enter and explore and get a lot of loot, and a final terminal reward of your choice (choice is a freighter tech module, freighter cargo expansion, or nanites).
The 3rd type is incredibly rare to find unless you specifically are using an emergency signal scanner, at which point it is a guarantee.
