Unless I plan to scrap a ship or just need the uranium/trit it might have inventory, I tend to leave them alone. It is usually easier to just find what you need for the new ship than screwing around with transfers.

1. Warp into a system and a battle is ongoing and you receive a incoming transmission on your communication to help the Freighter captain fend off the pirates. (easy to miss or ignore) Defeat the pirates without nicking the paint (causing damage to the Freighter), and then land on the rescued freighter and go to the bridge to speak to the captain.
2. If you have credits, land on any Freighter you see anywhere and chat up the captain. Inspect what they have and purchase one.
