That is probably the problem. There seems to be a bug with crashed ships within a base radius or near a player created landing pad. The game seems to get confused and treat the ship like a NPC ship.
1. lower the boat to the "ground" (not the landing pad) a short distance away.
2. get off the boat. Data will be saved.
3. load the most recent data. When you can operate, look around to see if there are any NPC boats on the landing pad.
4. if there is a ship, rush down and run up to the pilot of the NPC ship, talk to him and negotiate a price for the ship. (Do not exchange them)
5.He will give you a repaired boat for free. Let's be grateful.
It doesn't always work. Also note that the NPC ship will take off immediately if you are too slow.
By the way, the recovered crashed ship will reappear in about 3-5 days.
I saw this during the expedition at a small base with a near by landing pad. The landing pad may not be required to trigger it.
If you have a restore point before it took off try switching Steam to offline mode. If that doesn't work stay offline and look for another crashed interceptor. If you find one you don't like still take the brain and convert it to a harmonic brain then abandon the mission. This will save you a step when you find the one you want.
It is a common issue if you are trying to get a sentinel during an expedition: there are too many people around. Some of them could claim ship faster than you, or block the site with their structures. Had same issue twice during the expedition, literally nothing to worry about.
Saving/exiting, reloading, then checking the ship has sometimes worked for me. The process is very tedious and annoying at best.
Unless the ship you're after is "special" in some way, I agree with those who suggested moving on to greener pastures. Odds of finding an A-class are pretty good,,, I've found 4-5 of them out of 40-50 the sentinel ships I've located. Grab the brains... the ones you don't need to harmonize can be refined to, iirc, 2300 nanites per 10 brains.
