How Do You Reset Trace of Metal?
The pillar the quest told me to investigate already has its control nodes destroyed, so I can't progress. I've discarded the Laylaps that I had and taken over a new settlement, but the quest still wants me to investigate the same pillar on the old planet. How do I reset this quest to a pillar I can use?

You can try to get away from your normal planet system ( I read here more then 1.000 lightyears ), then the Trace of Metal shows an option to reset it at the new location.

So black hole, then?

Or get to the anomaly, and teleport to one of the other bases from other players - at least the community bases will work ( but these will bring you also to another galaxy ... Eisentamm I think ).

Resetting is not enough. I took a black hole to another quadrant, reset the quest, and it STILL sent me to the previous pillar. I'm gonna have to resettle in the new quadrant and see if THAT fixes it.

Wired ... I have done so on my second gameplay some time ago ....

OK - Hopefully a new settlement in that region of the galaxy will work it out. Good luck

I have started a settlement in a new system. It makes no difference; the quest refuses to reset.

Did you close the game ones in the meanwhile ? Or .... maybe .... wait one day before go on ...

I can't guess at what further means I must attempt to unglitch this quest; it's been infuriating trying to fix it, and I can't stand trying anymore. This game really makes me mad sometimes.

I'm sorry for this

If you don't want to wait physically, I think the game follows your pc clock for time based stuff so close the game and move it forward a day or 2 then go check if the pillar is reseted like most content ingame does after a certain time! Maybe that'll help.

Then you should set Steam into offline-mode BEFORE you setup the clock, and back to online-mode after finishing the test - otherwise Steam cloud sync function could make real bad things with your savefiles ( at least for me some time ago ).

I never encountered this since I leave the pillars next to my settlement alone until after this mission. You might be able to reset it by owning a settlement on a different planet.

Hi I had the same issue I used an save editor

link to the save editor: https://github.com/goatfungus/NMSSaveEditor

link to the steam thread explaining the process for any mission:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/275850/discussions/0/1744480967018121131/

click on file edit raw json
In the code the mission is named "^SENTINELS_1"
{
"Mission":"^SENTINELS_1"
"Progress":87,

By trial and error you can change the number next to progress by +1 or -1 In my case i switch from 87 to 88. It took me 2 try and I had no issue but you should copy your save just in case

thx to Ǥɾᴧᴤʆᴧᵯᴧ (https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197960668255) for the tips on the other thread
